Amil Ray Horn (1961-2019)

Amil Ray Horn, age 57, of North Platte, died unexpectedly at Great
Plains Health on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

Amil was born June 20, 1961, to Clifford and Loma (Howe) Horn at North
Platte where he grew up.  After attending high school, Amil worked at
True Value then joined the U.S. Navy in October of 1985.

In 1988, while still serving in the Navy, Amil married Estela Ochoa in
Kansas. Following his honorable discharge, they returned to North Platte
and Amil went back to work at True Value, working for them until they
closed.  The couple had a daughter together and later divorced.

Amil was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Loma Horn, and
sister, Julie Horn.

He is survived by his daughter, Cassandra (Scott) Gray, of Mullen;
stepsons, Jeromiah Ochoa, of Norfolk, Virginia and Antonio and Nicholas
Clemmons, of North Platte; brothers, Mike Horn, of Blyth, California,
Jim Horn, of North Platte and Luke Horn, of Rock Island, Oklahoma;
sisters, Betty (Jim) Lange and Sharon Gerrard, of North Platte; half
brothers, Earl Small, of Colorado and Julian Small, of North Platte; two
grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; as well as many nieces,
nephews and other family.

Cremation was chosen.  Memorial Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, June
5, 2019, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Rev. Dr. Douglas
A. Delp officiating.  Inurnment with military honors will follow in Fort
McPherson National Cemetery.  The memorial book may be signed at
odeanchapel.com or prior to the service at Odean Colonial Chapel at C &
Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph W. Anderson Service Times

Ralph W. Raymond Curtis James Death Notice

Raymond Curtis James,  91, of North Platte, died peacefully at home on
Tuesday, May 28, 2019.  Cremation was chosen.  Memorial Service will be
11 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2019, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore
with Father Josh Brown officiating.  The memorial book may be signed at

Eloise Ruth Shuck (1951-2019)

Eloise Ruth Shuck, 68, of North Platte passed away in the morning of Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the North Platte Care Center with her husband by her side.

She was born on May 17, 1951 in Stapleton, Nebraska to Cecil and Marjean (Long) Main.

A talented bowler, Eloise enjoyed various arts and crafts, including cross stitch. She also liked to play cards and could beat anyone at a game of Scrabble.

Eloise’s dying wish was to see her son, Josh, get married. While the wedding was scheduled all along for September 2019, Eloise was granted this wish on May 18 at the care facility she was in. Having had her wish come true, Eloise passed peacefully.

She is survived by her husband, Dan Shuck; sons, Everett and Josh Jones, as well as Josh’s spouse, Stephanie Savage, of Denver, CO.; several siblings and their spouses, James (Karen) Main, Wanda (Brad) Osnes, Janice (Jerry) Kirby, and Brenda (David) Carter; and several nieces, nephews and their young children.

Eloise was preceded in death by her parents.

Karon A. Richards (1947-2019)

Karon A. Richards, 71, of North Platte, passed away May 25, 2019 at North Platte Care Center.  She was born June 15, 1947 to Nick and Margaret (Sloan) Merksick at Cheyenne, WY.

Karon attended North Platte Public Schools.  In January of 1964, she was united in marriage to Larry J. Kirsch and to this union a son was born, Randy.

In 1978, Karon was married to Scotty Richards.  She was employed as a cashier for Woolworths, Ben Franklin, Gibson’s and most recently SunMart. She enjoyed bowling, where she won many awards.  She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Women’s 600 Club and loved all kids and shopping for knick knacks.

She is survived by her son, Randy Kirsch of North Platte; three brothers, Nick (Marilyn) Merksick, John (Carol) Merksick and Richard (Roxanne) Merksick; nephews, Erik and Bradley Merksick; nieces, Nicki Bagby, Jackie Merksick and Angela (Bryan) Eagle; and many family members and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

George Arthur Schaeffer (1926-2019)

George Arthur Schaeffer, 92, of Stapleton, passed away Friday, May 24, 2019, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born November 25, 1926, in North Platte, Nebraska, to Edwin and Kate Clark Schaeffer.  He graduated from North Platte High School at mid-term his senior year because of World War II.  In February 1945, he joined the army, serving his country in Iran, Egypt, and French Morocco.  He was honorably discharged in November 1946.

On February 26, 1949, he married Florence Joedeman in Gandy.  They moved to a farm in southern Logan County in 1958, where they made their home and raised four children.  The couple celebrated 54 years together.

George was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for 41 years.  He worked as an electrician for 34 of those years.  He retired in 1988 to work full-time on his farm.

On August 7, 2004, George married Joyce Burnside.  They enjoyed 14 years together in Stapleton.

He was a member of the Gandy Community Church.  He loved spending time with his family, fishing, playing cards, and traveling.  He played the harmonica and enjoyed the Bluegrass Festival.

George was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florence; son-in-law, Dan Witthuhn; brother & sister-in-law, Edwin & Betty Schaeffer; grandson, David Schaeffer; in-laws, Henry Joedeman, Lila Burnside, and Murene Leeper.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; three sons, Steven (Sally), Rodney (Pamela) of Stapleton, and Gary (Linda) of Thedford; a daughter, Gloria Witthuhn, of Arnold; stepdaughters, Patricia (Dave) Lewis of Lincoln, and Connie (Daryl) Luers of Wahoo; grandchildren, George (Jill) Schaeffer, Matthew (Melissa) Schaeffer, Greg (Stefani) Schaeffer, Todd (Addie) Schaeffer, Matthew Schatz, Marisa (Josh) Baxter, Orrin (Becca) Schaeffer, JuliAnna (Kyle) Schaeffer, Shelly Witthuhn, Kenneth (Michelene) Witthuhn, Traci (Darin) Logsdon, Jennifer (Jedd) Nicholson, Kylene (Robert) Littrel, Brett (Holly) Schaeffer, Kristina (Tyler) Neben, Derek (Dessie) Schaeffer, Trystan (Alec) McKillip, Drew Schaeffer, Jon Lewis, Julie (Josh) Schlote, Katie (Dan) Frieden, and Kelsy (Tyler) Hays; 35 great-grandchildren; in-laws, Robert & Luella Joedeman, Harold & Mary Joedeman, Rose Wonch, and C.E. & Willa Hendrich; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Marlis Doreen Allen Kaiwa (1941-2019)


Marlis Doreen (Allen) Kaiwa, 77, of Sutherland, Nebraska passed away at home with her family by her side on Thursday, May 23, 2019.

Marlis was born September 4, 1941, at Gandy, Nebraska to Samuel Ralph and Charlotte Enid (Hardin) Allen. She grew up in Tryon, Nebraska and Golden, Colorado where she attended Golden High School.

Marlis married Lanny Brouwer and to this union two sons, Lanny ‘Russ’ and Scott, were born. She later married Raymond Haworth and they had a son, Samuel R. On October 26, 1979, Marlis was united in marriage to Roy Kaiwa, Jr. at Tryon. A couple years later they moved to Barstow, California where they lived until 1999 when they moved to Sutherland.

While in Colorado, Marlis had worked as a Nurse’s Aide for several nursing homes and was a Medical Records Tech and Ward Clerk at Lutheran Hospital in Denver.

She enjoyed reading and was very talented with crocheting, knitting and tatting. She also liked collecting little ceramic mice and was a huge Denver Bronco fan. Marlis attended AA and was known to others as “Mom AA”. She was a woman with a big heart and a very kind, loving soul. She had a deep love for her family and loved being called Grandma. Marlis will be greatly missed.

She leaves behind her husband, Roy, of Sutherland; children, Russ (Shirla) Brouwer, of Spokane, Washington, Scott Brouwer, of Littleton, Colorado and Samuel (Terrie) Haworth, of Sutherland; grandchildren, Heidi Brouwer, Ross Brouwer, Jeremy Miller and Justin Miller; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Aiden, Daymon, Tatiyana, Ryan, Keaton, Kason, Maxx and Oliver; sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Russell Miller, of Tryon; brother, James Allen, of Kearney; as well as her AA friends and other family.

Marlis was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Charlotte Allen.

Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore in North Platte, Nebraska with Pastor Scott Mustion officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, south of Sutherland. Visitation will be 1-6 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. Betty Jean Dilsaver (1936-2019)


Betty Jean Dilsaver, 83, passed away on May 24, 2019 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Betty was born on March 15, 1936 to Frank and Regina Schinzel and was one of 8 siblings.

She attended high school in Lexington, Nebraska and then attended Kearney State College where she met Royce Dilsaver, her future husband. They were married at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington, Nebraska on May 31, 1958.

Betty and Royce moved to North Platte, Nebraska in 1961 and spent most of their years there. They retired to Lake Maloney where they spent their time enjoying the lake and many squirrels on their property.

She worked for KNOP-TV Station for numerous years as their bookkeeper.

Betty loved her ceramics, snow skiing and enjoying time with family and friends. She was an avid supporter of North Platte Catholic Schools and Husker Football.

She is survived by her husband Royce and their four children, Mike (Brenda) of Omaha, Nebraska, Diann (Alan) Rochlitz of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Steve (Linda) of Cheyenne, and John (Lezlie of Omaha. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and her siblings – Mary Ann, Jerome (Lucille), Don (Sue), Luanne (Trudy), Leonard; brother-in-law Don (Bev); sisters-in-law Donnita, Mary Ann and Lucille.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Kay, brother, Bernard, brothers-in-law Keith, Art, Dick and Vennith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the North Platte Catholic School Endowment Fund. Online condolences can be made at www.adamsswanson.com

Merilyn Ruth Mitchem (1926-2019)

Merilyn Ruth (Kurkowski) Mitchem, 93, or North Platte, Nebraska passed away on May 23, 2019 at North Platte Care Center.

She was born on May 8, 1926 in Ogallala, Nebraska to Max R. and Irene C. (Lyon) Kurkowski.  Her early years were spent in the Ogallala area.  Schooling began in Ogallala and continued in Perkins County in several rural schools and eventually to Grant, Nebraska where she completed her education, graduating in 1943.  During high school she was particularly active in music.  she played in the band and orchestra, sang in chorus, glee club, small vocal groups as well as some solo work.  She enjoyed good music of all kinds throughout her life.

After high school, Merilyn was employed by Knotwell Drug Store and later by L.A. Sullivan Department Store.

Merilyn was baptized as a baby and later confirmed in the Congregational Church, accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior for the remainder of her life.

In 1947, she was united in marriage with Gene Mitchem in Grant, Nebraska.  They were blessed with one daughter, Gaylene.

Merilyn was active in her church, the church choir, American Legion Auxiliary, especially the Junior Auxiliary.  She was also a 4-H Club leader.  Her special interests beyond music were dancing, bowling, fishing on Lake McConaughy, crafts and watching her grandson, Jarod, play sports, especially tennis.  She enjoyed them all until her failing health prevented her participation.

Merilyn was a faithful and devoted wife and a loving mother.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Gene, of over 71 years of marriage; their daughter, Gaylene Lombardi and a very special son-in-law, Dennis Lombardi; granddaughter, Cyndi and her husband Danny Griffiths; grandson, Jarod and his wife Joelle; great granddaughters, Brookelyn Griffiths and Makenna Lombardi; and many other relatives and friends.

Merilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Irene Kurkowski; two brothers, Paul and Eugene (Whitey) Kurkowski; and a sister, Maxine Mizner.
