Volunteers sought for Class D Boys State Golf Championship

(North Platte, Nebraska, May 2, 2019) – On May 21st and 22nd, the best of Nebraska High School Class D boys’ golfers will converge on North Platte for the state championship tournament. The event is expected to draw 90-110 golfers to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Class D is one of the highest-traveling classes, so we can expect many family, friends and well-wishers to come to North Platte to watch the tournament.

It will take a small army of volunteers to ensure that these boys have a memorable state championship experience. Helping with a state championship is incredibly rewarding. Just by getting to know these incredible young men, volunteers will find that their hope in the leadership of tomorrow is renewed.

One of the largest areas of volunteer needs is for scoring monitors. These monitors will accompany threesomes around the course in a golf cart, personally recording the hole-by-hole strokes of each golfer as well as helping with the speed of play by watching tee shots and looking for lost balls. Scoring monitors do not have to make any rules decisions. At least thirty scoring monitors will be needed throughout the tournament.

Other volunteers needed are Official Score Card Keepers, Score Board staff, Spotters, and Real Time Scorers. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Samantha Geisler at the North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors Bureau at 308-221-6865 or [email protected]. You can also apply to be a volunteer online at PLAYNORTHPLATTE.COM.

Priority is given to volunteers who can work both days of the tournament. Volunteers will receive coffee and rolls in the morning, lunch, and those who did not volunteer at the girls’ tournament last fall will receive an official NSAA jacket. Deadline to volunteer is May 6th.

Sailor Girls Eliminated at State

The Sutherland Lady Sailors were bounced out of the Class D1 girls basketball state tournament last night, falling to St. Mary’s 52-34 in Lincoln. An early three-point play by Sam Kennedy helped the Sailors to a first-quarter lead, but the Cardinals went on a 14-0 first half run as the Sailors struggled to make shots throughout the half. A 15-point lead was briefly trimmed to seven by the Sailors after an 8-0 run, but St. Mary’s hit a buzzer beating three to take a ten-point lead into the locker room. Sutherland could get no closer than eight points in the second half. Jalyne Schuster led the Sailors with 11 points. Joli Hopping chipped in seven points, and Kennedy finished with six points and a team-best nine rebounds. The season ends for the Lady Sailors with an overall record of 20-6.

Girls State Starts Today (LISTEN TO St. Pat’s-Hershey on ESPN 1410, Sutherland on Q Country)

The girls basketball state tournament begins today in Lincoln, and three Lincoln County teams will take the hardwood in first round action. Two of them will be seeing each other for the fifth time this season. The Hershey Lady Panthers and St. Patrick’s Lady Irish renew their rivalry in round one of the Class C2 tournament. The season series is even at two wins apiece. The Lady Irish are hoping to improve on last season’s fourth-place finish, while the Panthers are looking for their first ever state tourney win. You can hear that game on ESPN Radio 1410, with pregame coverage at 10:30 AM. Later tonight, the Sutherland Lady Sailors face St. Mary’s in round one of the D1 state tournament. That game can be heard on Q-Country 107.3 FM, with the pregame show starting at 8:30 PM.

Irish, Eagles, Sailors Gunning For Girls State Berths Tonight

Tickets to state will be punched for girls basketball teams in the C and D classes tonight, and three Lincoln County teams are hoping they can earn their way to the big dance. In the C2-6 district championship, St. Patrick’s is looking for their second straight trip to state. They take on Bridgeport in Chappell. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the action, with pregame coverage at 7:15 and the tipoff at 7:30. The Sutherland Lady Sailors are hoping to make a second state trip in three years. They take on Crawford in the D1-6 district final in Bayard. And the Brady Lady Eagles are trying to get to Lincoln for the third time in the last four years. They face Wauneta-Palisade in the D2-5 final in Wallace. A best case scenario has four Lincoln County teams heading to state. Hershey must hope for a Wild Card entry into the Class C2 field.

BASKETBALL: Subdistricts Continue; Lady Dawgs at Districts Tonight; Dawgs to Host

The action cranks up in the boys basketball subdistricts tonight. At the C2-11 subdistrict in McCook, the St. Pat’s Irish and Hershey Panthers renew their rivalry in the first round, with the Irish looking to move towards a third straight state appearance. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the action, with pregame coverage at 5:45 and the tip-off at 6. St. Pat’s isn’t the only Lincoln County team to be a top seed. Wallace has the number one spot in the D2-10 subdistrict. They play Hayes Center tonight in Cambridge. The Brady Eagles face Anselmo-Merna in the first round of the D2-9 subdistrict in Gothenburg. And after a win over Sutherland last night, Maxwell gets a crack at undefeated Paxton in the D1-11 subdistrict.

The class A girls basketball districts open tonight as well. The North Platte Lady Bulldogs take on Kearney at Millard West High School in round one of the A-2 district. The game will tip off at 7:15, following the Millard West-Omaha Bryan game.

The Bulldog boys will host the Class A-6 district. They’ll take on Papio South on 5:30 on Saturday, with a game between Omaha North and Omaha Bryan to follow. The A-6 championship game will be held Tuesday.

BASKETBALL: Dawgs Likely to Host District; C/D Subdistricts Open Tonight

It won’t be made official by the NSAA until Tuesday, but it appears that the North Platte Bulldogs boys basketball team will be hosting a Class A district as one of the top seven teams in the class in the Wild Card standings. As of Sunday night the Dawgs sat sixth in Wild Card points. They would host a district that would bring Omaha North, Omaha Bryan and Papillion-La Vista South to the Dawghouse. First round play in the boys Class A districts begins on Saturday.

Boys basketball subdistrict play in the C and D classes begins tonight with the play-in games in subdistricts with five teams. The Maxwell Wildcats and Sutherland Sailors will face each other in the D1-11 subdistrict play-in game tonight at 7 PM at the McGahan Activities Center in North Platte. Sutherland, the fourth seed, won both regular season meetings against Maxwell. The winner of this one gets the unenviable task of facing unbeaten Paxton on Tuesday night.

BASKETBALL: Irish, Eagles, Sailors Win Subdistrict Titles

Three Lincoln County teams took home girls basketball subdistrict titles last night. The St. Pat’s Lady Irish had to work overtime for theirs. Double overtime, in fact. Mandy O’Malley scored 16 points as the Lady Irish knocked off Hershey 48-43 for the C2-11 subdistrict crown. In the D1-11 subdistrict final, the Sutherland Lady Sailors routed Paxton 61-19. And in the D2-9 subdistrict final, Brady held off Eustis-Farnam 49-42. District final games are held next Friday night at neutral sites to be determined.
