Rockies Begin New Month In Los Angeles

With a miserable month of May behind them, the Colorado Rockies hope their rebounds starts with the first day of June. The Rockies are looking to salvage one game from three against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles tonight. The Dodgers struck for 7-1 and 8-2 victories in the first two games of the series and have tied the Rockies for third place in the National League West. Ubaldo Jimenez’s struggles have mirrored his team’s. The 19-game winner enters June winless, and is coming off one of his worst starts of the season, getting battered for six runs in a loss to St. Louis. Jimenez will be opposed on the mound tonight by Los Angeles’ Jon Garland. Garland hasn’t fared much better than Jimenez, posting a record of 1-4. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action between the Rockies and Dodgers tonight, with pregame coverage at 8:30 and the first pitch at 9:10.

Rockies End May With Another Loss

The Colorado Rockies came into May like lions and left like lambs. A miserable month ended with a whimper in the Rockies’ 8-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium last night. Rockies starter Clayton Mortensen lasted just four innings, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks. Matt Kemp and Casey Blake homered for the Dodgers in the victory. The Rockies managed just five hits off Dodger hurlers Ted Lilly and Rubby De La Rosa. One of those hits was a Ty Wigginton solo homer. The Rockies utilityman has homered in both games of this series. The series concludes tonight with the third game, as the Rockies send Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound to try and stop their three-game skid. The Dodgers counter with Jon Garland. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage starting at 8:30 and the first pitch at 9:10.

The East team will feature Brady’s Jessica Schrad and St. Patrick’s Taylor Smith. Seven local players will feature on the West team, including a pair of North Platte Bulldogs, Janessa States and Natalie Jolliffe. Makalya Gardner and Whitney Smith, who helped Wallace to an undefeated regular season and a trip to state, are on the West team as well. Sutherland’s Makayla Hecht, who also led her team to a state tournament berth, will suit up for the West team. Rounding out the list of Lincoln County participants are a pair of Hershey Lady Panthers, Skyler McConville and Jacque Star. The game will be played at McCook High School.

First Nationals Seniors Split, Juniors Sweep vs Twin Cities

The North Platte First Nationals Seniors suffered their first loss of the season in a doubleheader against Twin Cities in Scottsbluff yesterday. An 8-6 win in the opening game was followed by a 4-3 loss in the nightcap. Zack Ostergard’s homer backed winning pitcher Kade Folchert in the first game. Joe Smidt played longball in game two, but it wasn’t enough. The First Nationals Seniors drop to 8-1. At Bill Wood Field in North Platte, the First Nationals Juniors swept the Twin Cities Juniors in a doubleheader. Jack Kenny threw shutout ball, allowing just four hits, in an 8-0 victory in the first game. The juniors won the second game 11-4, with Drew Callahan throwing six strong innings and Luke Volz driving in a pair of runs. The Juniors are 6-3 on the season. Rockies-Dodgers Preview

The Colorado Rockies entered May on top of the National League West. Tonight, they’re trying to stay out of a tie for third place. The Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers play game two of their three game series at Dodger Stadium tonight. A 7-1 loss last night dropped the Rockies to 8-20 in the month of May and 4.5 games out of first place in the division, just one game ahead of the fourth-place Dodgers. The Dodgers have scored 15 runs in their last two games, while the Rockies have scored just four in the same span. Clayton Mortensen will try and stop the slide for the Rockies on the mound tonight. He’s searching for his second win of the season. The Dodgers will send left-hander Ted Lilly to the hill. Lilly has struggled to a 4.41 ERA this season but beat the Rockies twice in three tries last season. First pitch from the City of Angels is set for 9:10.

Rockies Lose Despite 14 Hits

The Colorado Rockies just can’t wait for May to be over. They lost their 20th game in 28 tries in the month with a 7-1 defeat in Los Angeles against the Dodgers last night. The Rockies out-hit the Dodgers in the game, pounding out 14 hits, but grounded into three double plays and had just one hit with runners in scoring position all night. Ty Wigginton provided the lone Rockies run with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Jason Hammel failed to make it out of the fifth inning, allowing all seven runs in taking his fifth loss of the season. The Rockies slip further back in the NL West race, now four and a half games behind first place Arizona. The Rockies and Dodgers play game two of their three game series tonight. Clayton Mortensen takes the mound for the Rockies, opposing Los Angeles’ veteran left-hander Ted Lilly. First pitch is at 9:10.

Jays Head to Corvallis For NCAA Regionals

The Creighton baseball team is the second seed in the Corvallis regional at the NCAA tournament this coming weekend. The Blue Jays qualified for the 64-team field as the Missouri Valley Conference champions. It’s their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007 and their third under coach Ed Servais in his eight seasons. The Jays will take on Georgia in the first game at the Corvallis regional, with host Oregon State paired up with Arkansas-Little Rock in the other matchup. Creighton finished the 2011 season with a 44-14 record and an RPI that ranked 29th in the nation. Their first round opponent, Georgia, posted a 31-30 record but had an RPI that ranked 16th. The Jays open NCAA tourney play at 3 PM on Friday. If they win the regional they would be paired with the winner of the Nashville regional in a best of three superregional for the right to go to the College World Series.

Green Transfers From NU

The Nebraska football team is now down to two scholarship quarterbacks after the departure of Cody Green from the program over the weekend. Green announced his intent to transfer on Friday, ending his Husker career after two seasons spent mostly as a backup to Zac Lee and Taylor Martinez. The junior will have two years of eligibility wherever he chooses to continue his college career. Green started four games in his two seasons, including two as a true freshman in 2009. He completed 66 of his 122 passes for 657 yards and threw five touchdowns along with three interceptions in 17 appearances. He also rushed 68 times for 254 yards. With Green’s transfer, Martinez and Brion Carnes are the lone scholarship quarterbacks remaining on the Husker roster, pending Bubba Starling’s potential arrival. Green is the second QB to leave the Huskers this summer, with Kody Spano ending his football career due to injuries.
