The Denver Broncos made by far their biggest splash of the free agency period by signing veteran defensive lineman Ty Warren to a two-year contract. Warren has played seven full seasons in the NFL, all with the New England Patriots, but he missed the entire 2010 season due to a hip injury suffered in the preseason. Prior to the injury, Warren had started 88 of 96 games for the Patriots in a six-year span. He recorded 20.5 sacks in his career as a Patriot. Warren played defensive end in New England’s 3-4 defensive scheme, but could fit as a defensive tackle in the Broncos’ more traditional 4-3 alignment. The Broncos gained Warren but lost a veteran on the other side of the line yesterday, as offensive tackle Ryan Harris left the Broncos to sign a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Neb.’s Nelson votes against debt deal in Senate

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson has voted against the debt ceiling deal in the Senate, making him the only member of
Nebraska’s congressional delegation to vote against the measure. Nelson, a Democrat, objected to the plan “because it will cut
Medicare, a promise we’ve made to Nebraska seniors that I intend to
keep.” The measure had already gathered the 60 votes needed to pass the emergency debt limit bill by the time Nelson cast his “no” vote Tuesday. Without the legislation, the government’s ability to
borrow would run out at midnight. Republican Sen. Mike Johanns, Nebraska’s junior senator, voted for the measure.
