Nebraska study finds evidence of nearly 20 cougars

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) – A Nebraska expert estimates that nearly 20 mountain lions have taken up residence in the Panhandle’s Pine Ridge area.  Sam Wilson is the non-game mammal and fur-bearing program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Wilson told the Lincoln Journal Star that dogs were used to find mountain lion droppings in Sioux, Dawes and Sheridan counties.  He says 33 samples were sent for detailed genetic analysis.  Wilson says that the test results and other information lead him to estimate that there are 19 mountain lions living in the Pine Ridge area.  Mountain lions, also called cougars and pumas, have turned up as far east in Nebraska as Omaha.

Heat continues to stress livestock in Neb.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the ongoing heat and humidity continue to put stress on livestock, but farmers are making progress with the wheat and hay harvest because of dry weather.
The USDA in its weekly crop report on Monday says temperatures across Nebraska were about 3 degrees above normal last week, with highs mainly in the mid to upper 90s. Rainfall ranged from over 2 inches in south central Nebraska to just a trace in the Panhandle.  Seventy-seven percent of the corn crop is in good to excellent condition, with 75 percent of the soybeans in good to excellent shape.  The wheat harvest is 87 percent complete, about six days behind the average.  The second cutting of alfalfa was 88 percent.  The average is 92 percent.

Rockies Come From Ahead To Lose In 10 Innings

The Colorado Rockies were one strike from opening their homestand on a high note, but John Mayberry’s pinch-hit two-run homer tied the game and Shane Victorino’s leadoff homer in the 10th ended up winning it for the Philadelphia Phillies, as they defeated the Rockies 4-3 at Coors Field. Huston Street recorded the first two outs in the ninth in order before giving up a double to Carlos Ruiz and the game-tying dinger to Mayberry. Victorino homered off Rex Brothers for the winning run. The big blasts negated a strong seven and one third inning start from Jhoulys Chacin and home runs from Seth Smith and Chris Iannetta for the Rockies. Game two of the three-game set between the Rockies and Phillies is tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action with the pregame coverage at 7:05 and first pitch at 7:40.

Broncos Trade For DT Bunkley

The Denver Broncos added to their defensive line depth yesterday with a trade that brings in yet another former first-round pick. The Broncos acquired Brodrick Bunkley from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2012 draft. Bunkley was reportedly headed to Cleveland as part of a trade with the Browns earlier in the day, but that deal fell through and Bunkley will head to Denver instead. The 14th overall pick in the 2006 draft, Bunkley was relegated to part-time duties last year with the Eagles after starting 47 games from 2007 to 2009. He has six career sacks. Bunkley will factor in the defensive tackle rotation with the Broncos and may start in pace of the retired Justin Bannan.

Gonzalez Set For Rehab Assignment

In desperate need of an offensive boost, the Colorado Rockies are hopeful that they’ll get their reigning batting champion back in the lineup soon. Carlos Gonzalez took batting practice last night, the first time he’s taken live swings since re-aggravating a right wrist injury on July 21 and going on the 15-day disabled list on the next day. Gonzalez will take more live batting practice before tonight’s game with the Phillies and then will hope to go out on a rehab assignment with one of the Rockies’ minor league affiliates. He’s eligible to come off the disabled list as soon as Friday for that night’s game. The team is 4-6 in Gonzalez’s absence. The Rockies take on the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Coors Field. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the broadcast with pregame coverage starting at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.
