Judge to consider competency of Neb. teen suspect

Stathis Kirkpatrick

McCOOK, Neb. (AP) – A court hearing has been scheduled to consider the competency of the suspect in the slaying of a 14-year-old McCook girl. The attorney for 19-year-old Stathis Kirkpatrick filed a motion earlier this month requesting a hearing to determine whether he’s mentally competent to stand trial. Records filed in Red Willow County District Court show a hearing on the request is set for Sept. 8. The Bartley man has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and three lesser felonies in the death of Kailee Clapp. The teen’s burned body was found the evening of Jan. 21 in a Bartley cemetery. She had been reported missing that morning from her McCook home.

Broncos Lose LB Williams For 3-4 Weeks

The Denver Broncos didn’t escape Saturday night’s preseason victory over the Seattle Seahawks without injury. Linebacker DJ Williams dislocated his right elbow in the first quarter of the 23-20 win, and is expected to miss 3 to 4 weeks. That would potentially put him on the sidelines for Denver’s first two regular season games. The Broncos will be feeling fortunate if another member of the defense doesn’t join Williams on the shelf for an extended period. Defensive tackle Broderick Bunkley left the game in the second quarter after injuring his knee on a cut block by Seattle guard Robert Gallery. The diagnosis was a sprained knee, but Bunkley was scheduled for an MRI to determine the full extent of the injury. The Broncos have already lost one defensive tackle, Ty Warren, to injury this preseason.

Rockies Avoid Sweep With 7-6 Win Over Dodgers

After setting a Major League record for consecutive losses on Sundays, the Colorado Rockies are now on a Sunday winning streak. The Rockies won their second straight Sunday game and avoided a sweep by the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 7-6 win in Los Angeles yesterday. Recently acquired third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff drove in four runs to lead the Rockies offense, and Seth Smith and Eliezer Alfonzo had RBI hits as well. Jhoulys Chacin was shaky on the mound for the Rockies, departing in the sixth inning, but did enough to earn his eleventh win of the season. The Rockies now head to Arizona to begin a three-game series with the NL West leading Diamondbacks tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action with pregame coverage at 8:05 and the first pitch at 8:40.
