Broncos Rumble, Fumble, Stumble in Season-Opening Loss To Raiders

In a sloppy, penalty-filled, rainy game, the Denver Broncos dropped their season opener to the Oakland Raiders 23-20 in Denver last night. Oakland took a 16-3 lead into the half on the strength of three Sebastian Janikowski field goals, including an NFL record-tying 63 yarder. But Eric Decker’s 90 yard punt return for a touchdown got the Broncos back into the game. Kyle Orton connected with Lance Ball on a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter brought the Broncos to within three, but the Raiders were able to run out the clock. It was a rough night for Orton, who threw for 304 yards but was sacked five times, intercepted once, and fumbled once. In a characteristically chippy game between the two longtime rivals, the teams combined for 25 penalties. The Broncos host the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday.
