Huskers Up To Eighth In Both Major Polls

Another victory earned Nebraska another spot in the AP and USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 polls. The Huskers moved up to the eighth spot in both polls after Saturday night’s 38-14 victory at Wyoming. Led by Rex Burkhead’s career-high 170 rushing yards and two touchdowns, the Huskers eased to the win in the second half in their first road game of the season and will enter Big Ten Conference play unbeaten. So, too, will their first ever opponent in their new conference. The Wisconsin Badgers also rolled to a 4-0 non-conference record and are ranked seventh in both major polls. Next weeks clash in Madison promises to be the marquee game on the college football schedule for the week. ESPN’s televised College Gameday program will be live from Camp Randall Stadium before Saturday night’s kickoff.

Broncos Lose To Tennessee

The Denver Broncos dropped to 1-2 on the season with a 17-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Nashville yesterday. The Titans scored with four and a half minutes to play to take the three point lead, and Kyle Orton was intercepted in Titans territory inside of two minutes to allow the Titans to seal the victory. With a 14-10 lead early in the fourth quarter the Broncos decided to go for the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the one yard line, but Willis McGahee was stopped short and the lack of points on the drive proved costly. Orton threw two TD passes in the game, one to Matthew Willis and one to McGahee, but was also intercepted twice. The Broncos were outgained by 102 yards, posting just 231 yards of total offense. Next Sunday, the Broncos visit the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.

Rockies Set Franchise Single-Game Hit Record In Win

In a season that has been historic for many of the wrong reasons, the Colorado Rockies made some positive franchise history yesterday. The Rockies banged out a franchise single-game record 25 hits in a 19-3 win over the Houston Astros in Houston. Kevin Kouzmanoff hit two home runs and drove in five runs, and Chris Iannetta homered and added five RBI of his own to lead the Rockies attack. Kevin Millwood pitched seven innings of three hit ball to earn the victory, and also added to the offensive onslaught with his second homer of the season. The Rockies conclude their season with a three-game series in San Francisco against the Giants, needing to win one game to avoid a 90 loss season. ESPN Radio 1410 has game one of the series tonight, with pregame coverage at 8:30 and the first pitch at 9:15.

Oil pipeline opponents pin hopes on Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Environmentalists hoping to block a proposed underground pipeline that would funnel oil from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico have pinned their hopes on an unlikely ally: the conservative state of Nebraska. Few states are as red as Nebraska, which hasn’t supported a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. But opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline has risen steadily since the project was proposed three years ago. The reason is fear of contaminating the Ogallala Aquifer, a subterranean reservoir that spans a large swath of the Great Plains and provides water to much of Nebraska, as well as seven other states. Opponents have grown to include Nebraska’s conservative governor along with the state’s U.S. senators, a Republican and a conservative Democrat. Many in the public also are hostile to the idea.
