Child killer gets new hearing

Donald Lee

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The Nebraska Supreme Court has ordered a new hearing for a man convicted of killing his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter.
Donald Lee was sentenced in 2009 to 70 years in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder in the 2008 death of 4-year-old Ashlynn Gamble, who was strangled and had her skull fractured.
Lee claimed in his appeal that he had been denied his right to a speedy trial, that the court had not properly advised him of his rights when he entered a no-contest plea and that he was denied effective legal representation.
On Friday, the state’s high court rejected Lee’s no-contest and ineffective counsel arguments, but said the Lincoln County District Court failed to produce documents showing Lee had asked for continuances, delaying his trial.

Prelim. hearing set for “Dog Kennel Four”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – A preliminary hearing has been set for four North Platte residents charged with child abuse and false imprisonment after police found two young boys locked in a dog kennel in their home.

Court records show that 22-year-old Ashly Clark, 25-year-old Bryson Eyten, 24-year-old Samantha Eyten and 20-year-old Lacy Beyer declined to waive their preliminary hearings during a Lincoln County Court appearance on Thursday. Contested preliminary hearings for the four have been set for Nov. 10.

The four were arrested late Monday after police found the boys, ages 3 and 5, in a 30-by-42-inch wire kennel inside a filthy trailer home. Police say the boys’ mother, Clark, told officers she put the boys in the kennel at night to keep them from climbing out of a window.

Huskers’ Randle Out For Saturday

Nebraska is already down one defensive tackle with the season-ending injury to Jared Crick. Now their depth at the position has taken another hit. Sophomore Thad Randle will not play Saturday against Michigan State due to a knee injury. Huskers head coach Bo Pelini confirmed the injury through a spokesman after yesterday’s practice, at which Randle was seen on crutches with a brace on his right knee. Randle recorded three tackles last week against Minnesota, in the first game since Crick’s injury. There was no comment as to the extent of Randle’s injury, nor how much action he would miss. In Randle’s absence, redshirt freshman Jay Guy is expected to join the defensive tackle rotation that includes Baker Steinkuhler and Chase Rome as starters and Terrence Moore as a reserve.

Random musings from Geno Verdez

Greetings-

I’ve been sitting back and surveying the city of North Platte for the last several months since the release of my book, “Welcome To Nebraska.” At first, I wondered if it was wise to dig up dirt on a town I know oh so well, and how it would be received. In honesty, I have come to realize that most of those who have read it are not surprised by its contents. In fact, more than one review would indicate that the reader could identify with one or more of the characters. Good. That was the intent. But it is a world that most are not completely accustomed to; at least not from a first-hand perspective.

Lately as I watch, and wait, and gather….I find that there are more than enough juicy tidbits in the news that would certainly add fuel to a creative fire. But alas, when the population is being exposed to children locked in dog kennels, perp after perp getting busted for sexually assaulting kids, and the meth use that is too widespread to ignore, I realize that I would have to strive for a ridiculous level to shock anyone around here anymore.

That’s not to say that I write for shock value; I write for release. I write to chase away the demons. Or, at least channel them…

Let me make one thing clear, there are a tremendous number of very good people in this area. And there are quite a few bad. Same story- thousands and thousands of towns and cities across America; the world. Varying degrees of drama, crime, freedom and chaos.

We’re just chillin’ here on our chunk of the rock. Make the most of it. Make your mark.

Love each other. Don’t molest children. And try to stay out of jail.

Until then-
Geno Verdez
