No drugs? Thanks for the cash….

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post)- A traffic stop on I-80 near North Platte last Friday morning turned up over $90,000. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the vehicle had been pulled over for speeding and was acting suspicious, prompting a search for contraband. The driver alerted the deputy that the money was in a locked, double-vacuum sealed metal box. $90,040 in U.S. money was found inside. The driver could not provide proof of ownership nor details as to how he got the money, but did not have any other contraband in the vehicle. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies and DEA agents seized the cash but the driver was allowed to go free.

KIMBALL, Neb. (AP) – A Wyoming man and his girlfriend have been charged in the death of a Colorado man whose body was found in western Nebraska. 40-year-old Vencil Ash III has been charged in Kimball County Court with first-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old Ryan Guitron. Ash’s girlfriend, 23-year-old Kelly Meehan, has been charged with aiding and abetting first-degree murder. Investigators believe Ash took Guitron to an abandoned farmstead in southwest Kimball County in September 2003, shot him and buried him in a woodpile. Human remains, identified as Guitron’s, were found in the woodpile early last year. Authorities say Ash and Guitron were once roommates. Ash is set to be arraigned Nov. 1st. Neb. jobless rate at 4.2 pct for 3rd month in row

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska’s 4.2 percent unemployment rate for September marks the third straight month without a change in the state’s jobless estimate. The preliminary figure released Friday shows Nebraska’s seasonally adjusted rate is about half the national rate, which was 9.1 percent in September. The Nebraska Labor Department says the September 2010 figure for the state was 4.5 percent. The labor report shows two industry sectors experienced job growth during September. Professional and business services added 2,138 jobs, while education and health services added 920 jobs. The unemployment rate in Omaha dropped to 4.4 percent in September from August’s 4.6 percent. In Lincoln, the rate dropped to 3.5 percent from 3.6 percent. The unemployment rates for Omaha and Lincoln are not seasonally adjusted and cannot be compared to the state rate.

Huskers Set To Travel To Minnesota

The thirteenth-ranked Husker football team had to wait two weeks to follow up the greatest comeback in school history. They’ll return to the field this Saturday in a Big Ten road contest against Minnesota. With the bye week giving the Huskers an extra week of preparation for the Golden Gophers, Husker head coach Bo Pelini likes the progress his team has made. “I thought it was a really good week,” Pelini said. “I thought we had a great week of preparation. When you combine last week and what we were able to accomplish last week, we had four good days of practice. I feel like we got better during the week of practice. I told the team it’s time to put it to the test on Saturday.” The Huskers have won the last 14 meetings against Minnesota. Tomorrow’s game will be nationally televised on ABC. Funeral protesters protected by 1st Amendment

Shirley Phelps Roper

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A federal appeals court has struck down a state law that keeps picketers several hundred feet away from a funeral or memorial service. A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday reversed a U.S. District Court ruling against members of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. The appeals court relied on its 2008 ruling in a Missouri case that said peaceful protests near funerals are protected by the First Amendment’s right to free speech. The opinion came on the appeal of a lawsuit filed by Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of the Westboro Baptist Church that regularly protests at the funerals of fallen soldiers. Phelps-Roper had asked for a preliminary injunction to stop enforcement of the law, saying it’s constitutional.
