Gulf Seafood Isn’t Safe

This is in response to the story, “HELPLESS, TEARS: Dealer says load of crab “contaminated with oil” –STATE TRYING TO COVER IT UP”. When I was in Mobile, AL after the Gulf oil spill, every official made it clear that Gulf seafood was still safe to eat. I took my daughter to Dauphin Island to walk on the beach (since we hadn’t gone near the beach since the spill) and we discovered that our feet were turning black. Underneath the top layer of sand the oil still stood, almost a year later. That was the last time we went to the beach. We could smell the oil from our home in Grand Bay, AL and I was pregnant. We worried that our baby would be born with birth defects because of the fumes. They paid clean up crews to come and sift through the sand and shuffle everything around but as soon as the tide would come in, the oil was back. I feel horribly for the people on the Gulf Coast that make their money from that water or the people like my family that moved to ! Mobile to enjoy the water because it is not safe. People need to make money but at what cost? If the government is going to tell it’s people to eat food even when they know it isn’t safe then we have to be our own advocates. Luckily for us, our son was born healthy. People over Profits America! ~Occupy North Platte
