Give to the United Way- Heads may be shaved!!!

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post)- The Mid Plains United Way has two goals for February- raise $55,000 and shave some heads.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Mid Plains United Way progress thermometer took up residence on the corner of B and Dewey, right in front of Pro Printing. Currently, the local United Way chapter is at $195,000 of their $250,000 goal. Executive Director Ginny Martin and Administrative Assistant Sandra Kroon have volunteered to shave their heads if their goal is met.
However, with such a short time to achieve such a big goal, the board knew they would need more help. So, board member Karen Knisley challenged Mayor Marc Kashke to join Martin and Kroon to shave his head if the United Way succeeded. He quickly and enthusiastically agreed.
If you would like to contribute to the challenge and help some hair fly, send your donation to: Mid Plains United Way, PO Box 172, North Platte, Nebraska, 69103.

Run free young puma!!!

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) – A young mountain lion that had been unintentionally caught in a Nebraska Panhandle trap has been released.
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission officials say the young female weighed about 50 pounds. She was caught in a legal foothold trap in Dawes County.
The trapper called Game and Parks to report the trapping.
Officials tranquilized the animal, checked her health, and then released her on Friday.
Commission carnivore program manager Sam Wilson says high prices for bobcat pelts have led to more trapping and more incidental captures of mountain lions, which also are called cougars or pumas.

Broncos Introduce Del Rio as New Defensive Coordinator

The new defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos arrived at the team’s facilities yesterday to, as he put it, ‘get a head start’ on the job. Jack Del Rio was hired as the team’s defensive coordinator on Saturday, replacing Dennis Allen, who left after one season to take the head coaching job with the Oakland Raiders. Del Rio was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 until late November of 2011, when he was fired. In Del Rio’s tenure in Jacksonville, the Jags went 68-71 and reached the playoffs twice. Prior to becoming a head coach, Del Rio was the defensive coordinator in Carolina in 2002, working with current Broncos head coach John Fox. Del Rio played in the NFL for eleven seasons as a linebacker, and was a Pro Bowler in 1994. He is Denver’s seventh defensive coordinator in as many seasons.

In gymnastics, freshman Jessie DeZiel earned her third consecutive Big Ten individual honor after her performance in the Huskers’ meet against Missouri last Saturday. DeZiel was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after she won the all-around competition against the Tigers.

Gambling in NE? What are the odds???

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A state lawmaker says a gambling proposal he introduced would generate millions in Nebraska tax revenue that is currently going to Iowa.
Columbus Sen. Paul Schumacher told a legislative panel Monday that his measure (LR375CA) would help Nebraska cover the cost of education programs and roads. The proposed constitutional amendment would give the Legislature authority to legalize casino gambling.
Schumacher says three casinos within a 60-mile radius of downtown Omaha collect a combined $428 million a year in revenue.
Roughly three-fourths of that total comes from Nebraskans. He says Iowa collects about $93 million a year in tax revenue.
Gambling opponents say the economic benefits are overblown, given the cost of regulating such businesses as well as the likely increases in embezzlement and other crimes related to gambling addictions.
