Wheat farmers not fans of springlike winter…

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – Some Nebraska wheat farmers have been worrying about the warm, dry winter.
Crop specialist Bob Klein says that planting conditions were perfect in fall for dry land winter wheat. The most recent federal survey shows about 74 percent of the Nebraska wheat crop is in good or excellent condition, far above the 42 percent in good or excellent condition reported in the survey a year ago.
But Klein says dry soil warms up easier than wet soil and that January plant growth could hurt the harvest in July.
Plus, the likely ground freeze and thawing can be hard on wheat plants.
Klein says area wheat fields could use “a good blanket of wet snow. That would be the ideal situation.”

Ogallala man dies after Christmas Eve crash

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) – Authorities say a 26-year-old Ogallala man has died from injuries suffered in a crash on Christmas Eve.
Nebraska state trooper Aaron Watson said that Colt Lintt died last week at a Scottsbluff hospital.
Watson says Lintt was driving on U.S. Highway 26 in Keith County when his pickup left the road near mile marker 146. Watson says Lintt over-corrected and the truck went off the other side of the highway and rolled.
Lintt was taken to Ogallala Community Hospital, and then flown to Scottsbluff.

Thomas’ Heroics Lead Broncos To Shock Playoff Win

DeMaryius Thomas’ heroics led the Denver Broncos to one of the most unlikely playoff victories in NFL history. Thomas’ 80-yard touchdown catch in overtime lifted the AFC West Champion Broncos to a 29-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Sports Authority Field in Denver. The Broncos outscored the Steelers 20-0 in the second quarter on their way to taking a 20-6 halftime lead, but Pittsburgh scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie the game and send it to the extra session. On the first play of the overtime, Thomas wrapped up the game and made the Broncos the third straight playoff team with a record of 8-8 or worse to win their Wild Card weekend matchup. Next up for the Broncos is a Divisional Round trip to Foxboro to face the New England Patriots. Kickoff is set for Saturday night at 7 PM.

Moore Leads Huskers Past Hawkeyes

The 19th ranked Nebraska women’s basketball team survived a tough test in Iowa City, holding off the Iowa Hawkeyes 77-72 yesterday afternoon. Trailing by five with nine and a half minutes to play, the Huskers went on a 19-6 run over the next six minutes, capped by a Brandi Jeffrey three, to seize control and earn their eighth straight win. Point guard Lindsey Moore stole the show for the Huskers, coming close to her second career triple-double. Moore led three Huskers in double figures with 22 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and handed out nine assists. Also scoring in double figures were Jordan Hooper with 17 points and Emily Cady with 14 points. The Huskers are now 14-1 and 3-0 in Big Ten play. They are back on the road on Thursday night, making their first trip to Madison to take on Wisconsin.

Nuggets Host Hornets, Go For Fifth Straight Home Win

The Denver Nuggets put their perfect home record on the line tonight as they welcome the New Orleans Hornets to the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets saw a four-game winning streak snapped with a 121-117 defeat in San Antonio on Saturday night, despite Danilo Gallinari matching his career-high with 31 points. But the 6-3 Nuggets are flawless in their first four games on their home floor. The Hornets are 2-6, with all six losses coming in succession after a 2-0 start. They lost to Dallas on the road 96-81 on Sunday night. This is the second meeting of the season between the Nuggets and the Hornets. Last Friday in New Orleans, the Nuggets got 23 points from Gallinari and used a 19-0 second-half run to erase a halftime deficit and knock off the Hornets 96-88. Tipoff tonight in Denver is set for 8 PM.

To tax, or not to tax…

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska cities that want to upgrade roads, build swimming pools and pay their rising employee costs are preparing for a legislative fight this session with state lawmakers who want to restrict their power to tax.
Leaders in many cities, including Lincoln, Kearney and Omaha, want the Legislature to give them authority to raise the sales tax with voter approval, but Gov. Dave Heineman and many lawmakers remain opposed.
Supporters say cities should have the power to seek voter approval of tax increases, but opponents say the need to restrain government spending take precedence over calls for local control.
Don Wesely, a former state lawmaker who now lobbies for Lincoln and Omaha, says the effort to impose state authority over cities marks a change in Nebraska’s historic support for local control.

Police seek possible robbery-shooting victim

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) – Police in Scottsbluff say they have identified a man who may have been shot in an apparent robbery but that the man remains missing.
Officers responded to a report of gunshots at a Scottsbluff home early Friday morning.
Police Capt. Brian Wasson says the victim has been identified as 26-year-old Francisco Camacho, who Wasson says fled on foot after the disturbance.
Wasson says it’s unknown if Camacho was shot. His condition and whereabouts also are unknown but police say they believe he is still in Scottsbluff.
Wasson says four people were in a garage at the home when a witness said two armed men wearing masks entered the garage but there was no evidence of gunshots in the garage.

NE’s one-house Legislature celebrates diamond anniversary

NE Legislature

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska’s nonpartisan, one-house Legislature has turned 75.
Lawmakers honored the anniversary Friday as a hallmark achievement of the late U.S. Sen. George W. Norris, who campaigned for an end to the state’s traditional two-house, partisan Legislature.
Voters approved a constitutional amendment to adopt a Unicameral system in 1934. Its first members convened on Jan. 5, 1937.
Supporters of the system argued that a one-house Legislature would be cheaper, more efficient, and make it impossible for lawmakers to hide their actions in conference committees. Critics worried that the system would concentrate too much power in the hands of too few lawmakers.
Nebraska is the only U.S. state with a one-house Legislature, although Guam and the Virgin Islands also use the governing system.
