Is that a gun in your pocket…better get it licensed

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The Nebraska State Patrol is again reminding Nebraskans holding a permit to carry a concealed handgun that, for some of them, it’s time to renew those permits before they expire.
Such permits issued in Nebraska are good for five years. If the permit is renewed before its expiration, the permit holder will not be required to retake a certified training course. The cost for renewing a permit is $50.
Those who allow their permits to expire will be required to retake a certified training course and pay a $100 fee for a new permit.
Since 2007, the State Patrol has issued 16,185 conceal carry permits. Nearly 3,500 were issued within the first year.

Fairer funding formula?

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A bill that seeks to ease a long-standing funding fight between Nebraska’s urban and rural community colleges has advanced for debate in the Legislature.
The Education Committee voted 6-0 Tuesday to advance a bill that would change the state’s funding formula for Nebraska’s six community colleges.
York Sen. Greg Adams said his bill (LB946) would make it easier for each college to predict how much they will receive each year in state aid.
The community colleges agreed to the new formula after months of closed-door talks. But one member of Omaha’s Metropolitan Community College Board argued Tuesday that his school still wasn’t getting its fair share. Board member Dave Newell says the new formula unfairly favors smaller, rural community colleges with fewer students.

Murder case delayed for North Platte man

Thirty-four-year-old Rogelio Diaz is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 35-year-old wife, Michelle, at their home on June 25.
A Lincoln County District Court judge on Monday continued the case until Feb. 27 for a status hearing.
Police say Diaz killed his wife in their backyard. Police say he told officers that she fell from steps, but he later changed his story.

Huskers Get Walk-On Commitment From In-State QB, First Commit For 2013

The Nebraska football program was thin at the quarterback position in the 2011 season. Yesterday, they picked up one of the best in-state QBs as a walk-on for next season. Ryker Fyfe, who helped lead Grand Island to the state quarterfinals last season, chose the opportunity to walk on with the Huskers over a full-ride offer from Nebraska-Kearney. Fyfe was the first-team All-Nebraska quarterback selected by the Omaha World-Herald. He threw for over 1900 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 14 scores for the Islanders last year. The Huskers also got their first commitment for their recruiting class of 2013 last night. Tre’vell Dixon, from Baldwin, Louisiana, gave his verbal commitment to Nebraska. Dixon projects as a defensive back, but also plays quarterback for his high school team.

Sandhill cranes chillin’ in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Sandhill cranes are making a rare appearance in Nebraska this winter.
The majestic gray birds with red caps have been spotted along the Platte River west of Grand Island. About 1,000 cranes have overwintered along the river near the National Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary at Gibbon.
Sandhill cranes normally pass through Nebraska in the fall on their way south. In January, they should be hundreds of miles away where it’s warm.
Ornithologist and author Paul Johnsgard, of Lincoln, says severe drought has devastated the crops in their wintering grounds in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
Kent Skaggs, officer manager at Rowe Sanctuary, says they’ve had cranes since mid-November. He says it’s because of the open water, leftover corn in harvested fields and the mild weather.
