Early morning NP robbery leads to arrest

David Traxler

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post)- A 30-year-old North Platte man faces three felonies after an early morning robbery at a local convenience store.
David W. Traxler has been charged with Robbery, Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony, Terroristic Threats and Resisting Arrest after allegedly robbing the Kwik Stop on Rodeo Road and Madison at knifepoint.
Officers responded to a call around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday that an armed robbery had occurred. After a search police found the suspect, Traxler, on foot near 9th and Carr. He attempted to escape but was subdued with a Taser. The knife used in the robbery was found in Traxler’s backpack as was the exact amount of money taken in the heist. The mask worn was recovered a short time later in a nearby alley.
Traxler was taken to the Lincoln County Jail where he remains. No bond is listed.

Mooove it cow….or I’ll sue….maybe not

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Motorists who strike livestock on Nebraska roads could have a tougher time winning negligence lawsuits against farmers and ranchers, under a bill set for a legislative hearing.
A proposal by Ogallala Sen. Ken Schilz would require motorists to show evidence that livestock owners committed “specific acts of negligence” that allowed the animals to escape. Schilz will present the measure (LB1021) Wednesday to the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee.
Current Nebraska law says judges and juries cannot infer livestock owners were negligent just because the animals escaped.
But the law does not require evidence of specific negligence.

Kearney man arrested for punching 14 year old son

Dennis Wright, Jr.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) – A 34-year-old Kearney man has been charged with felony child abuse, accused of punching his teenage son in the head.
Dennis Wright was arrested last week and released from Buffalo County jail on Monday.
Police say the 14-year-old boy’s mother called police after her son told her his father was beating him.
The boy told officers his dad had hit him several times in the face and head. Wright says the boy was uncontrollable and confronted him during an argument at his home. Police say Wright acknowledged hitting his son once, in an eye.
A public phone listing for Wright could not be found. His lawyer didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday from The Associated Press.

Husker Men Host Michigan

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will try and stop a two-game losing streak tonight in Lincoln, as they host 22nd-ranked Michigan. The last time a ranked team came to the Devaney Center, Husker fans got to rush the court as the Big Red toppled then-number 11 Indiana 71-70 on January 18. But the Huskers have dropped back-to-back games, losing at Northwestern last Thursday and at home to Minnesota on Sunday. The Wolverines are coming off a 64-54 loss at Michigan State on Sunday afternoon. The last time the Huskers played Michigan in basketball was 1993. In Michigan’s last visit to Lincoln, back in December of 1964, they entered as the top-ranked team in the country but left on the losing side of a 74-73 final score. Tip-off tonight at the Devaney Center is set for 7:30.

Hooper Added to Wade Trophy Watch List

Nebraska sophomore forward Jordan Hooper was one of eight players to be added to the 33-player watch list for the Wade Trophy, the national player of the year award for women’s college basketball. Hooper has scored 20 points per game and pulled in 9.4 rebounds per contest for the 13th-ranked Huskers, who are 19-3 and share the Big Ten lead with an 8-2 conference record. The Alliance native is second in the conference in scoring and tops in the conference in rebounding. She also tops the Big Ten with ten double-doubles on the season and has scored in double figures in all 22 games. Only one Husker in school history has won the Wade Trophy. Karen Jennings took home the honor in 1993. The Husker women are back in action on Thursday night at the Devaney Center, when they host Michigan.

Nuggets Take On Mavericks In Denver Tonight

The Denver Nuggets will likely be without leading scorer Danilo Gallinari for a month after he suffered a sprained left ankle in Monday night’s home loss to Houston. X-rays also found a chip fracture in Gallinari’s left foot. Gallinari was averaging 17 points per game for the Nuggets, and was scoring 19 per game in Denver’s last 10 contests. Though Gallinari will be out, the Nuggets do hope to have some reinforcements for tonight’s game against the defending world champion Dallas Mavericks. Arron Afflalo is likely to return after missing Monday night’s game with a foot injury, and Nene is a game time decision with a heel injury. The Nuggets will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid tonight at the Pepsi Center when the Mavericks come calling. Tip-off time is set for 8 PM.
