Fine, probation for NE man after gun found in carry-on

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) – A 37-year-old rural Kearney man has paid a $300 fine and been place on probation for trying to take a loaded handgun onto a plane at Kearney Regional Airport.
Randy Black recently pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of violating his concealed-weapon permit for having a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun in his carry-on luggage at the airport on Sept. 25. Black also was placed on six months’ probation.
Authorities say the gun was detected by a security X-ray machine at the airport.
Federal authorities say firearms must be placed in locked, hard-sided containers in checked baggage and be unloaded, and owners must declare the presence of the weapons.
Black wasn’t considered a terror threat and his case was not forwarded to federal prosecutors.

Super Bowl XLVI: Woodhead Scores, But Pats Lose

Danny Woodhead’s first-half touchdown gave the New England Patriots a halftime advantage, but it was the New York Giants who claimed victory in Super Bowl XLVI, with a last-minute touchdown from Ahmad Bradshaw giving the Giants a 21-17 triumph. Woodhead played a major role in New England’s 14-play, 96-yard touchdown drive that capped off the first half, and he ended the drive by hauling in a four-yard scoring pass from Tom Brady that put the Pats ahead 10-9 at the break. On the evening, the North Platte native rushed 7 times for 18 yards and caught four passes for 42 yards. He’s the second player ever from Chadron State College to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Wide receiver Don Beebe scored in back-to-back Super Bowls in 1991 and 1992 with the Buffalo Bills.

Hershey Squares Off With Maxwell (Listen LIVE on Q-Country 107.3)

After Mother Nature played havoc with the weekend’s prep sports schedule, local teams who had games postponed will get back into action tonight. It’s a battle of Lincoln County on the hardwood in Hershey this evening, as the Panthers welcome the Maxwell Wildcats to town. The Panther boys have been playing well in 2012, winning seven of their eight games in the new calendar year. They’re 11-4 on the season. The Lady Panthers are 13-5 after beating Sidney last Saturday. Maxwell’s hoopsters are looking to get on the winning track. The boys have lost four straight to drop to 5-11 on the season, while the girls have dropped three straight and are now 9-8. Q-Country 107.3 will broadcast the action from Hershey tonight. Pregame coverage is scheduled to get underway at 6:15.

Husker Men Can’t Shoot Straight in Second Half, Lose to Minnesota

The Nebraska men’s basketball team couldn’t find the mark in the second half, and it cost them in their second straight defeat, as they fell to Minnesota 69-61 at the Devaney Center yesterday afternoon. The Huskers shot just 31 percent in the second half, and went six minutes without scoring after they tied the game at 39 with twelve and a half minutes left, allowing the Gophers to take the lead for good. Nebraska had three players score in double figures, led by Bo Spencer’s 18 points. The Huskers were without Jorge Brian Diaz, and they may have to get used to that, as head coach Doc Sadler said after the game that he thinks Diaz is unlikely to play again this season with his foot injury. The Huskers are now 11-11 and 3-8 in Big Ten play. They host Michigan on Wednesday night.

(LETTERS TO THE POST) Illinois teen brandishing a butter knife shot and killed by Police

I saw this story online this morning and it really disturbs me.

From CBS Chicago

Stephon Watts, 15, was shot and killed by Calumet City police officers on Feb. 1, 2012. Police said he had cut an officer with a kitchen knife, but his family said it was only a butter knife.

Shoot him in the foot.. Shoot him in the leg.. Even the shoulder would have been fine.. Throw your nightstick at his head… Heck, blow his hip clean off….Why KILL a 15 year old kid? Was he that big mean and scary? Show me a GOOD reason to KILL .vs. DISABLE.. Ponderous, man… Just Ponderous.. I do guarantee you this.. we will NEVER hear the REAL story as to why this child is dead.. Ain’t gonna happen.. Law Enforcement is given the control to make these decisions and that’s fine. I have great respect for Police Officers. I come from a family full of cops.. I just don’t think it was the best decision they could have made in this case.
