UNL goes Gaga this week

Lady Gaga

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor this week will help performer Lady Gaga launch a group to promote tolerance and empowerment among youth.
Susan Swearer is a psychology professor and anti-bullying expert at UNL. She will be among the scholars speaking Wednesday at Harvard University as part of Lady Gaga’s Born this Way Foundation.
Swearer says she is honored to be part of the new group and looks forward to bringing her Bullying Research Network to another national stage.
Swearer says Lady Gaga is doing more than giving lip-service to a cause. She says the pop singer is thoughtfully and intellectually trying to solve the problem of bullying.
More details on the foundation are at www.BornThisWayFoundation.org. For more information on the Bullying Research Network, visit https://go.unl.edu/vgf.

Look at me!!! Kerrey reconsidering?

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A former campaign manager says former Nebraska U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey could decide as early as Wednesday whether he’ll run for the job again.
Paul Johnson says the popular two-term senator and former governor called him Monday and said he was taking another look at the open seat. Just weeks ago, Kerrey signaled he wouldn’t seek a comeback.
Should Kerrey decide to get in this time, it could instantly revive a Senate race Democrats and Republicans alike seemed ready to declare dead.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson is retiring, and Democrats badly need to hold the seat because Republicans need to net just four seats to take back the chamber.

Nebraska woman guilty of beating husband to death

Susan DeJong

FAIRBURY, Neb. (AP) – A Jefferson County jury has found a Fairbury woman guilty of beating her husband to death.
55-year-old Susan DeJong was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony in the death of 52-year-old Thomas DeJong at their home west of Fairbury in March 2011.
The prosecutor had told jurors last week that Susan DeJong became obsessed with suspicions that her husband was having an affair. Defense attorney James Mowbray had argued the evidence didn’t mean proof of the charges against her.
Both attorneys declined to comment after the verdict was read Monday afternoon. The judge in the case set sentencing for May 3.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) – Authorities say a 10-year-old girl died when a van driven her 14-year-old sister went off the highway and crashed into a ravine in Howard County in central Nebraska.
The sheriff’s office says Shelby Koperski, of Elba, died in the accident Monday morning near Elba. Officials say she was in the back of the van and was ejected. The van ended up on top of her.
The sheriff’s office says the driver, Amy Koperski, lost control of the van. Authorities say Amy Koperski and the girls’ mother, 49-year-old Anne Koperski, who was a passenger in the front seat, were injured.

Gary Wilson

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – A North Platte man has been arrested on weapon and explosives charges after a two-week investigation.
The Nebraska State Patrol says 61-year-old Gary Wilson was arrested last Friday. He was taken into custody without incident near a grocery store.

Wilson is charged with possession of firearms by a felon and possession of explosives. He was released from the Lincoln County jail on Sunday on $15,000 bond.
Wilson’s case is not on the online court system, and it’s not known if he has an attorney.

Hershey and St. Pat’s Win District Finals; Brady Hopes to Join Them at State

Lincoln County boys basketball teams went two-for-two last night, as both Hershey and St. Patrick’s took home district championships and earned trips to the state tournament. In the C1-6 district championship game in Ogallala, Hershey jumped out to a 17-point first quarter lead and never looked back in a 55-37 victory over Kimball that sends the Panthers to Lincoln for the first time since 1994. The C2-6 district final in Sutherland saw the St. Pat’s Irish book a repeat ticket to state as they shut down Perkins County 49-39. Tonight, a third Lincoln County team will hope to join next weekend’s party. The Brady Eagles are in search of their first state tournament berth since 1998 as they take on Hayes Center in the D2-5 district final in Hershey, with tip-off scheduled for 7 PM.

Four Husker Women’s Hoopsters Earn All-Big Ten Honors

Four Nebraska women’s basketball players were honored with the announcement of the All-Big Ten teams yesterday afternoon. Sophomore forward Jordan Hooper was named to the All-Big Ten first team. The Huskers’ leading scorer and rebounder became the fifth sophomore in program history to earn first-team all-conference honors and the first since Kelsey Griffin in 2007. Junior Lindsey Moore was named to the second team, the second straight year the Husker point guard has received second-team conference honors. Freshman forward Emily Cady earned a spot on the all-freshman team and was also named honorable mention all-conference. Senior guard Kaitlyn Burke garnered a spot on the conference’s Sportsmanship team. The Huskers open Big Ten tournament play on Thursday afternoon

Secondary Coach Raymond Leaves Husker Staff

The Husker football team has lost a member of its coaching staff. Defensive backs coach Corey Raymond is departing after one season with the program to accept the same position at LSU. Raymond had previously turned down an offer from his alma mater to replace Ron Cooper, but when LSU coach Les Miles offered him the job the second time, he accepted. Raymond replaced Marvin Sanders on Bo Pelini’s staff last spring after an even briefer stint elsewhere. He had been a member of Kevin Wilson’s staff at Indiana for just one month before bolting for Nebraska. The Huskers finished 18th in the country in pass defense and 34th in pass efficiency defense under Raymond’s tutelage. The Huskers will likely hope to have someone in Raymond’s place on the staff before the start of spring practice March 10.
