NEBRASKAland DAYS Foundation raising money to renovate

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post)- The NEBRASKAland DAYS Foundation has launched a campaign to raise money to rebuild the west entrance of the Wild West Arena. The goal is to sell enough bricks to fill the area underneath a new entry pavilion that will serve as the centerpiece for the redesigned west entryway.
“Thousands of people come through the gates of the Wild West Arena every year,” says Foundation President Larry Stobbs. “It seems a shame have them walk through the entrance we have.”
NEBRASKAland DAYS Board President Lance Carlson says the current entrance has a number of qualities that don’t exactly reflect well on one of North Platte’s biggest attractions. “When people walk in they are met with chain link and barbed wire. It kind of feels like you’re walking into a prison,” says Carlson. “The new design will be much more warm and inviting. It also allows us to open the space up a bit inside the vendor area, allowing us to expand our offerings.”
The Foundation’s goal is to sell 800 bricks to pave the new entrance. Prices range from $150 to $3000 per unit. “We wanted a campaign that allows anyone who has enjoyed our facility throughout the years to participate. We think we have done just that,” said Stobbs.
2012 marks the 45th year that NEBRASKAland DAYS will be held in North Platte. The entrance renovation marks the first major aesthetic upgrade since a new crow’s nest was installed above the bucking chutes over a decade ago.
Donors may surf to the NEBRASKAland DAYS Website and click on the Foundation’s page. Brick’s can be ordered and payment can be submitted directly through the website. Forms can also be picked up at the NEBRASKAland DAYS office.
The NEBRASKAland DAYS Foundation is a 501c3 entity. All donations are tax deductible as provided by law.

“ARSENIC AND OLD LACE” RETURNS TO THE NORTH PLATTE COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE

After a twenty year hiatus, the classic stage production “Arsenic and Old Lace,” returns to the North Platte Community Playhouse stage. Written in 1939 by Joseph Kesselring, the play opened in New York City in 1941. In 1943, “Arsenic and Old Lace” moved to the famous Hudson Theatre where it ran until June 17, 2004 after 1,444 performances.
The play is a black comedy which revolves around film critic Mortimer Brewster. In addition to making the biggest decision of his life, marrying his long-time girlfriend Elaine, he must also deal with the antics of his “dysfunctional” family. His family consists of his two Aunts, Martha and Abby who have taken to murdering poor lonely old men by poisoning then with their homemade elderberry wine, made with a few “secret” ingredients; a brother Teddy who is convinced that he is Teddy Roosevelt and continuously digs locks for the Panama Canal in the family cellar; and brother Jonathon who has received plastic surgery, performed by the alcoholic Dr. Einstein, to conceal his identity and now looks like horror film actor Boris Karloff, who was a member of the opening night cast.
“Arsenic and Old Lace” is no stranger to the stage at the North Platte Community Playhouse. It was last produced in 1992. Arleen Petersen and Playhouse matriarch Virginia Robertson portrayed the Brewster sisters, Martha and Abby. Robinson, daughter of the late Keith Neville, was a staple at the North Platte Community for many, many years. The duo also starred in the production at the State Theatre in 1978. Petersen said that Virginia would only take part in the 1992 revival if her “sister” agreed to join her. “While the lines were a little harder to pick up the second time, but Virginia was an absolute joy to work with, and I absolutely fell in love with her.” Petersen said. “The true regret, is that Virginia will not be here to see the production.” Robertson passed away several years ago. “With Virginia’s passing, the Playhouse lost one of the best performers it has ever known.”
The current cast includes, Lou Cox-Fornander as Abby Brewster, Carolyn Clark as Martha Brewster, Gene Gildorf as Rev. Dr. Harper, Andrew Lee as Teddy Brewster, Ben Hill as Officer Brophy, Sam Fornander as Officer Klein, Amanda Pleiss as Elaine Harper, Ryan Pleiss as Mortimer Brewster, Wayne Anderson as Mr. Gibbs, James Keller as Jonathan Brewster, Josh Gesinski as Dr. Einstein, Sam Miller as Officer O’Hara, John Hales as Lieutenant Rooney and Morris Turner as Mr. Witherspoon. Chandra Boeka is the Understudy for Martha and Ben Bartholomew is the Understudy for Mortimer.
The production opens Friday February 10, with additional performances on February 11, 12, 18 and 19. Friday and Saturday curtains are 8:00PM and Sunday Matinees are at 2:00PM. Ticket sales begin Monday February 6, and are $15.00 for Adults and $7.00 for Children and Students. Tickets can be purchased at the North Platte Community Playhouse at 301 E. 5th, Monday-Friday during production weeks from Noon-5:00. Additionally, tickets can be purchased online at www.northplattecommunityplayhouse.org or at the door approximately one hour prior to the production. Huskers 2012 Recruiting Class at 17: Valentine, Moore, Curry In, Peat Out

The Nebraska scholarship class of 2012 is capped at 17 after Illinois defensive tackle Vincent Valentine committed to the Huskers this afternoon. Valentine was the final target left on the board for the Huskers, who got commitments from three of the five players who announced today that had Nebraska on their lists. Louisiana all-purpose athlete Alonzo Moore and Texas defensive tackle Aaron Curry made their commitments to Nebraska official this morning. But the top target on Nebraska’s board eluded them. Andrus Peat, a five-star offensive tackle from Arizona, chose Stanford instead. All fourteen players who had verbally committed prior to today’s National Signing Day have sent in their letters of intent. The Huskers also have a full 18-player class of walk-on commitments.

Knights Win Fourth Straight, Top Doane JV

The North Platte Community College men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game last night, routing the Doane College junior varsity 80-56 at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. The Knights shook off a slow start and went on a run that gave them an 11-point lead at the halftime break, and led by as many as 27 points in the second half. Three Knights scored in double-figures, led by Nick Tomsick, who scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second 20 minutes. Darian Doleman added 15 points and led the Knights with 9 rebounds. Aboubacar Casse chipped in 10 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. The Knights improve their record to 13-8 ahead of an important weekend that sees them travel to Eastern Wyoming College on Friday and Western Nebraska on Saturday for South Sub-region play.

Nuggets Fall in OT at Memphis

The Denver Nuggets suffered their second consecutive close loss, falling in overtime to the Memphis Grizzlies 100-97 in Memphis last night. The Nuggets held a 12-point lead at halftime, but a spate of second-half turnovers allowed the Grizzlies to send the game to the extra session, where OJ Mayo’s three-pointer with 35 seconds left gave the home team the lead for good. Denver had one last crack at tying the game and sending it to a second OT, but Rudy Fernandez’s three at the horn was off the mark. Al Harrington scored 23 points off the bench to lead the Nuggets offensive effort. Andre Miller added 20 points, Nene chipped in 14 points, and Ty Lawson scored 12 points. The Nuggets drop to 14-7 on the season. They head to Los Angeles to try and avenge Sunday’s loss to the Clippers Thursday night.
