G.I.: Hire chief, stop blowing smoke…

Fmr. Grand Island Fire Chief Troy Hughes

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) – A legal action has been filed against the city of Grand Island because it’s lacking a fire chief.
Wednesday’s filing in Hall County District Court asks the court to order the city to appoint a fire chief “with all deliberate speed.”
Nebraska statutes say cities with 37,500 or more residents must have a full-time fire chief.
Chief Troy Hughes resigned in October 2011. Civil service rules limit the term of the interim chief’ to only four months in a fiscal year, so he stepped down Monday.
City Administrator Mary Lou Brown says the city is following state law because there is a fire chief position that’s just vacant.

Western Neb. outbuilding fire under investigation

MORRILL, Neb. (AP) – Authorities are investigating a western Nebraska fire that destroyed an outbuilding, including a vintage car and a variety of workshop tools.
The Nebraska State Fire Marshal is still investigating the Friday afternoon fire, which destroyed an outbuilding and workshop north of Morrill. Turner says the fire started in the workshop, but the cause has not been determined.
Turner says the building was locked when they arrived, and firefighters had to kick the door in to fight the blaze. He says a pickup inside the building was retrieved, but a renovated 1968 Chevy Chevelle worth about $20,000 was destroyed.
The total damage is estimated at $100,000.

There was no relief in sight for the Nebraska baseball team in their season opening series against Gonzaga in Peoria, Arizona, as they let late leads slip away in all three games in a Bulldog sweep. On Friday, a three-run eighth inning by Gonzaga lifted them to a 7-4 victory. Saturday night saw newly-named closer Tyler Niederklein allow five runs in the ninth inning as an 8-5 lead turned into a 10-8 defeat. And on Sunday, Brandon Pierce was called upon to close out a 4-2 ninth-inning lead but allowed three runs, and the Huskers went on to lose 5-4. The Huskers will be back on the road next weekend when they head to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the Kleberg Bank College Classic. Ogallala makes fire chief job a volunteer post

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) – The Ogallala City Council has eliminated the paid full-time job of fire chief.
The council voted 4-0 to change the job to a volunteer position. The new city code says the chief will be a volunteer who is elected to the position by the general membership of the department, subject to approval of the city manager.
Councilman Mark Knudsen says the possibility of eliminating the paid position has been discussed during the budget process for the seven years he’s been on the council.
Councilman Pete Peterson says money was budgeted for the position during last year’s budget process, but revenue has fallen short of projections.
The council action eliminated the job of Chief Greg Stofer.
