The Colorado Rockies released veteran third baseman Casey Blake, saving them over $1.5 million dollars that they would have owed had he made the Opening Day roster. Blake was signed to a non-guaranteed contract for the 2012 season, but struggled with injuries throughout the spring. Blake’s release means Chris Nelson is the favorite to play third base for the Rockies to start the season, with Jordan Pacheco in the mix as well. The Rockies lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3 in Cactus League action yesterday. Marco Scutaro drove in a pair of runs in the defeat, which dropped the Rockies to 13-11 in spring play. Today, 49 year-old Jamie Moyer continues his bid to make the Opening Day roster as he takes the mound when the Rockies host the Chicago White Sox in Scottsdale.
