McGee Makes Game-Winning Play in Nuggets Debut

The Denver Nuggets got a big play from their newest member to avoid disaster at the Pepsi Center last night. Javale McGee’s tip-dunk with five seconds left gave the Nuggets a 116-115 win over the Detroit Pistons. McGee, recently acquired from the Washington Wizards in a trade, followed a missed free throw from Arron Afflalo to put the Nuggets in front. The Pistons had come back from a 25-point first half deficit to take the lead thanks to Ben Gordon’s 45 points, but Gordon missed a game-winning shot attempt at the buzzer. Ty Lawson’s 25 points led the Nuggets on the night. The Nuggets finished up their season long nine game homestand with a 5-4 record and are 26-21 on the season. The team now embarks on a seven-game road trip, which opens up on Friday night against the Utah Jazz.

Injured Worker Settles With Western Nebraska CC

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit in an accident that injured a worker who fell 30 feet while removing an old scoreboard at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff.

The school’s insurance carrier settled the lawsuit for $915,000.

Mack Downey and his wife, Deborah, sued over his fall at Cougar Palace in 2003. A trial court divided the negligence at about 33 percent among Downey, the college and a sign company.

The school appealed. The Nebraska Supreme Court in January released the sign company from liability and returned the case to the lower court to apportion the sign company’s share of the negligence between Downey and the school.

WNCC attorney Phil Kelley says instead of continued litigation, its insurance carrier settled the lawsuit.

Fire That Killed NE Man Was Intentionally Set

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An investigator says a fire at a Lincoln apartment where a man died last week was intentionally set.

City Fire Investigator Tony Chapp says it’s not clear who set the fire, and he wouldn’t say if police are looking for suspects.

Authorities say firefighters found the body of 67-year-old John Strobel Jr. in his second-floor apartment where the fire started last Friday. No cause of death has been released, pending results of an autopsy.

(LETTERS TO THE POST) Someone has a bone to pick with the State of Nebraska

The State of Nebraska dropped BCBS for its employees and will be going with United Healthcare starting either June or July. State employees in North Platte, Lexington, etc (from all departments) have been contacting the Human Resources Department with the state and have been sending letters to Representatives and Senators. None of the employees concerns that the doctor’s wont accept United Healthcare are being listened to. Another case of Nebraskans who live in Omaha and Lincoln dont care about the rest of us in the rest of the state. If you do some digging, you’ll find tons more. Tons. There are like 3 doctors in North Platte that will take the insurance and employees are asking their doctors to accept United Healthcare and the doctors are saying No. I know for a fact there are no OB/GYN’s, No Pediatricians, No Podiatrists, No Dermatologists, No ENT’s, and I’m sure there’s more. One of the doctor’s listed as active and accepting UH is not even alive anymore. State employees are getting screwed in Central / West Nebraska and there’s nothing we can do but take it apparently.

Tebow Sent To Jets For Picks

NEW YORK (AP) – Tim Tebow has been traded to the Jets.

The team said Wednesday it has acquired the polarizing quarterback from the Broncos. Denver general manager Brian Xanders says the Broncos will receive fourth- and sixth-round draft picks, while New York gets a seventh-rounder – all in 2012. The trade first was reported by Fox Sports.

Denver started shopping Tebow after signing Peyton Manning. Tebow is expected to complement starter Mark Sanchez, who received a $40.5 million contract extension, with $20.5 million guaranteed, earlier this month. The Jets also had pursued Manning.

Tebow led the Broncos to the playoffs last season – along the way beating Sanchez and the Jets, who missed the postseason. But Denver executive John Elway believed Manning gave the team a better chance at winning a championship now.

(UPDATE 4:30 PM – The trade has hit a snag due to details in Tebow’s contract mandating a $5 million payout from any team acquiring Tebow via trade. The Jets evidently did not read the contract before agreeing to the deal. The Jacksonville Jaguars and St. Louis Rams may step in and try and acquire Tebow if the Jets deal falls through.)

(UPDATE 7:55 PM – ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the deal as originally reported is back on.)

Nat’l Weather Service Says Four Tornadoes Touched Down Sunday Night

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – The National Weather Service has completed its survey around North Platte and now says four
tornadoes were spawned by the powerful supercell thunderstorm that passed over the area. Authorities say Sunday night’s twisters injured at least four people and damaged homes, farm buildings and vehicles and derailed or knocked over 31 railroad cars. Two of the tornadoes were rated on the EF3 on the enhanced Fujita scale, with winds between 136 and 165 miles an hour. One was rated an EF2, with winds between 111 and 135 mph, and the remaining tornado was rated at EF1, with winds between 88 and 110 mph.

When handing down the sentence, the British judge said, “You were pictured on a number of occasions with a bottle full of petrol with a rag as a wick.
