Seeing Is Believing: Manning A Bronco, Tebow To Be Traded?

The surreal became reality yesterday afternoon as future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning held up an orange jersey with his name and number 18 on the back. Manning and the Denver Broncos agreed to a five-year, $96 million contract to make the 14-year veteran the new starter in the Mile High City. Manning will be owed $18 million for the 2012 season, all of it guaranteed. Future years and dollars will be contingent on Manning passing physicals prior to each season. With a new signal-caller in town, the Broncos are reportedly shopping around their deposed starter, Tim Tebow. Several teams, including the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins, have been connected to Tebow in trade rumors. The Broncos aren’t expected to receive much more than a mid-round draft pick in return.

Kalkowski Helps Huskers Batter Bears

Kash Kalkowski returned to the Nebraska lineup in a big way as he helped power the Huskers to a 12-3 win over Northern Colorado in the first game of a brief two-game series at Hawks Field last night. Kalkowski has missed much of the early portion of this season and been relegated to mostly bench duty with a nagging groin injury, but in a starting role last night he delivered a two-run single in the first inning that gave the Huskers the lead and led off the fourth inning with a home run. The Huskers opened things up with six more runs in that fourth inning and tacked on three more runs in the eighth. Freshman Kyle Kubat earned his first career win on the mound for the Big Red. The Huskers move to 15-7 with the win. Today’s game against the Bears gets started at 12:05, a change from the originally scheduled 1:35 time.

Storm’s Wilcox Named USHL Goalie of the Week

Tri-City Storm goaltender Adam Wilcox was named the Reebok Goaltender of the Week in the United States Hockey League for his performance in a pair of victories last weekend. Wilcox made 36 saves on 37 shots in a 5-1 Storm win over the Fargo Force in Kearney on Friday night. Saturday, he repeated the feat exactly, stopping 36 more shots in a 2-1 triumph over the Force. The honor marks the second time Wilcox has been named Goaltender of the Week this season. The wins allow the Storm to hang on to sixth place in the USHL’s Western Conference. They currently occupy the last playoff spot in the conference, one point behind fifth-place Sioux City and two points ahead of seventh-place Des Moines, who have a game in hand. The Storm host Omaha on Friday night and Dubuque on Saturday night.

Tax Cut Compromise Reached… Wait… Government Compromise? That Can’t Be Right…

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The state senator who sponsored Gov. Dave Heineman’s tax cut plan says lawmakers have reached a compromise that will allow them to lower taxes.

Bellevue Sen. Abbie Cornett said Tuesday that an amendment to the bill would amount to a “down payment” on the tax relief that the Republican governor had promised.

Heineman’s original plan would have cost the state $327 million over a three-year period. The original measure would lower corporate and individual income tax rates, and eliminate an inheritance tax imposed by counties.

The new, whittled-down proposal would phase in lower individual income tax rates over three years, and provide about $56 million annually in cuts when fully enacted. It would not affect corporate income taxes or the inheritance tax.

NE Legislature Advances Measure to Create State Tourism Commission

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers have advanced a measure that would create a state tourism commission.

Lawmakers voted 31-1 Tuesday to give the bill first-round approval.

The proposal by Ellsworth Sen. LeRoy Louden seeks to enhance tourism in Nebraska, with a commission that would brainstorm ways to promote the state. Tourism is Nebraska’s third-largest industry.

The bill would establish the commission in place of Nebraska’s Travel and Tourism Division, which is part of the state Department of Economic Development. Louden says the new commission would be more independent, and could work more directly with Nebraska’s tourism industry.

The commission would be required to develop a statewide plan to attract tourists.

K-9 Unit searches North Platte High School.. Drugs seized

On Tuesday March 20, 2012, the North Platte High School was searched by K-9 Police Dogs for the presence of illegal drugs. This was an unannounced and random search that was conducted by several law enforcement agencies who assisted with trained K-9 Police Dogs. The Nebraska State Patrol, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office and the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office all assisted in the search. Student activity continued as usual in the classrooms while the dogs swept through the school where student lockers are located as well as the vehicles parked in the school parking lot. The search resulted in three students being arrested for possession of marijuana and one of those three kids was also arrested for illegal possession of prescription drugs. All drugs seized during the search were found in vehicles that were parked in the parking lot.

It should also be noted that the amounts were all less than an ounce (personal use).
