Huskers Interview Scott Sutton For Men’s Hoops Head Job
The search for the new head coach of Nebraska men’s basketball has led them to a son of a coaching legend. Athletic director Tom Osborne met with Oral Roberts head coach Scott Sutton yesterday. Sutton, the son of former Kentucky and Oklahoma State head coach Eddie Sutton, has won 250 games in 13 seasons on the bench at the Summit League school, making him the winningest coach in program history. He’s led Oral Roberts to three NCAA tournament appearances and three NIT appearances. Osborne is in Atlanta to interview Sutton and other coaching candidates over the next two days. The Huskers have previously spoken with UCLA head coach Ben Howland, who rejected Nebraska’s advances to stay with the Bruins, and have also interviewed Wisconsin-Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter.
Huskers Receive Conference Honors; Host Northern Colorado Tonight
The Nebraska baseball team picked up its first ever Big Ten Conference weekly honors, as Josh Scheffert was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Pat Kelly was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Scheffert, a junior from Lincoln, hit a scalding .650 in six games last week for the Huskers, getting 13 hits in 20 at-bats. He hit three homers and drove in ten runs. In Saturday’s win over Louisiana Tech, Scheffert had a career-best five-hit game. Kelly went 8-for-14 in four games last week, including his first two career home runs. The Huskers went 5-1 in six games last week to improve their record to 14-7. They open a two-game series against Northern Colorado tonight and open their Big Ten Conference schedule with a three-game home set against Illinois on Friday night.
Livestock Producers Warned Of Tornado Debris
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Livestock producers are being warned to watch out for plastic, insulation and other debris in pastures and in feed from Sunday night’s tornado that hit North Platte.
Randy Saner is the extension agent for Lincoln and McPherson counties with the University of Nebraska. He says insulation and plastic are apparently spread across a wide area and can cause problems if eaten by cattle, sheep or goats.
Saner says fiberglass isn’t toxic, but it can block the digestive system.
Saner recommends picking up insulation and plastic found in fields and discarding hay and other feed heavily contaminated with tornado debris.
An EF3 tornado, with winds up to 165 mph, hit North Platte, injuring four people, damaging homes and vehicles and derailing railroad cars.
The weather service says the strongest damage in North Platte appears to be to homes along a city street on the west side and to power line trusses southwest of the city.
Another tornado was reported Sunday night in the northern Nebraska town of Valentine. No injuries or damage were reported.
Grass Fires in Panhandle Destroy Bayard Home
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Officials say a home near Bayard was destroyed by one of several grass fires in the Nebraska Panhandle area over the weekend.
The Scottsbluff Rural fire department fought four grass fires on Sunday. Assistant Fire Chief Paul Reisig says a fire near Bayard started late Sunday afternoon in an area that burned last week. The wind-swept fire destroyed a home. No injuries were reported.
Reisig say the three other grass fires were near Minatare. Other fires in were reported near Alliance and Broadwater.
The National Weather Service said Monday that more fires were possible across the Panhandle because of dry conditions and winds gusting up to 35 mph. A fire warning remains in effect across the Panhandle through Monday evening.
Ozzy Pleads Guilty to Killing Jerry Garcia

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A Columbus man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the stabbing death of another man in a motel parking lot.
Twenty-one-year-old Ozzy Tilden was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Jerry Garcia during a fight in the parking lot of the Sundown Motel in Columbus last October.
Tilden pled guilty last Friday in Platte County District Court. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss a weapons charge.
Tilden will be sentenced April 20. He faces 20 years to life in prison.
Peyton Manning Chooses Denver Broncos
DENVER (AP) – ESPN is reporting that Peyton Manning is negotiating to join the Denver Broncos. Citing anonymous sources Monday, ESPN said that the four-time MVP has instructed agent Tom Condon to negotiate to complete a deal with Denver. Manning became a free agent when the Indianapolis Colts released him March 7 after the quarterback missed all of last season because of multiple neck surgeries.
The addition of Manning could well lead to the trade of Tim Tebow, who energized the Broncos in leading them to the playoffs last season despite his uneven play.
The San Francisco 49ers and the Tennessee Titans have been the other teams considered finalists in the race to sign Manning.

Huskers Bow Out in NCAA Tournament First Round
The Nebraska women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last night. The sixth-seeded and seventeeth-ranked Huskers were upset by eleventh-seed Kansas 57-49 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Though four Huskers scored in double figures, the team was plagued by a poor shooting night, as they shot just 33 percent from the field. Kaitlyn Burke led the way for the Big Red with 14 points. Lindsey Moore chipped in 12 points, Jordan Hooper added 11 points, and Emily Cady scored 10 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Nebraska, which made its tenth NCAA Tournament appearance and second in the last four years, ended its season with a 24-9 record. Kansas will play Delaware in the second round on Tuesday night.
Huskers Fail to Complete Four-Game Sweep
The Nebraska baseball team was unable to secure the four-game sweep of Louisiana Tech, falling to the Bulldogs 6-5 at Hawks Field in Lincoln yesterday. Pat Kelly’s second home run of the season, a two-run blast in the fourth inning, capped a five-run rally and gave the Huskers a 5-4 lead after they had fallen behind early. But that lead would prove to be short-lived, as Husker reliever Luke Bublitz surrendered a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning that ended up being the deciding blow in the game. Cory Burleson, Kale Kiser and Bryan Peters drove in runs for the Big Red. Kelly, Rich Sanguinetti, and Josh Scheffert each had a pair of hits. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Huskers and drops them to 14-7. They host Northern Colorado in a two-game series starting Tuesday.
