Hooper Named Honorable Mention All-American

Nebraska sophomore forward Jordan Hooper was named an honorable-mention All-American by the Associated Press. Hooper led the Huskers in scoring, with 18.9 points per game, and rebounding, with 9.3 boards per contest. She finished fourth in the Big Ten in scoring and led the league in rebounding. During the season, Hooper reached the 1,000 career point plateau faster than any player in Nebraska history. She was an All-Big Ten first team selection and a WBCA All-Region 6 pick as well. Hooper is the first sophomore in Nebraska history to receive AP All-America honors, and only the second underclassman in school history to earn such an honor, joining Anna Deforge, who was an All-American as a junior in 1997. The Huskers finished the 2011-2012 season with a 24-9 record.

Huskers End Homestand On High Note, Top Wildcats

The Nebraska baseball team closed out their seventeen-game homestand with a 6-3 victory over Kansas State at Hawks Field last night. The Huskers struck early, as Kash Kalkowski and Kurt Farmer drove in runs as part of a three-run first inning that put the Big Red ahead to stay. Richard Stock drove in a pair of runs in the third inning, and Rich Sanguinetti plated Nebraska’s sixth run in the fourth. Brandon Pierce worked three shutout innings to start the game, and five Husker relievers took over from there, with Travis Huber earning the save. The Huskers wrap up their 21-day homestand with a 12-5 record, and are 18-9 on the season overall. Nebraska next ventures out on the road for their first trip in Big Ten conference play, as they open a three-game series at Northwestern on Friday afternoon.

Rockies Release Veteran 3B Blake

The Colorado Rockies released veteran third baseman Casey Blake, saving them over $1.5 million dollars that they would have owed had he made the Opening Day roster. Blake was signed to a non-guaranteed contract for the 2012 season, but struggled with injuries throughout the spring. Blake’s release means Chris Nelson is the favorite to play third base for the Rockies to start the season, with Jordan Pacheco in the mix as well. The Rockies lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3 in Cactus League action yesterday. Marco Scutaro drove in a pair of runs in the defeat, which dropped the Rockies to 13-11 in spring play. Today, 49 year-old Jamie Moyer continues his bid to make the Opening Day roster as he takes the mound when the Rockies host the Chicago White Sox in Scottsdale.
