Huskers Drop Rubber Game to Boilermakers

The Husker baseball team was unable to earn a series victory over 16th-ranked Purdue at Hawks Field this weekend, falling in Sunday’s rubber game 8-3. After dropping the series opener 8-5 on Friday night, the Huskers rebounded and won Saturday’s game 8-3, setting up big stakes for both teams in the finale. The Boilermakers came out strong, taking a 6-0 lead thanks to a four-run fourth inning that chased Husker starting pitcher Zach Hirsch from the game. Nebraska responded with a three-run fourth inning of their own, keyed by Josh Scheffert’s two-run single. But the Huskers would be unable to generate any more offense, and Purdue tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and ninth. Nebraska falls to 8-7 in the Big Ten and 26-15 overall with the defeat. They visit Creighton on Tuesday night.

Rockies Win on Sunday… Wait, What? (TONIGHT’S GAME POSTPONED)

The Colorado Rockies have won three straight series after taking the rubber game of their three-game road set against the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 yesterday afternoon. Michael Cuddyer’s two-run double in the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie and helped move the Rockies back over the .500 mark. The Rockies road trip continues tonight as they head off to Pittsburgh to begin a three-game series with the Pirates, though inclement weather has tonight’s series opener in doubt. If they play ball, ESPN Radio 1410 will be the place to hear the call. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:30, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05.

UPDATE: Tonight’s Rockies game has been postponed. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday.

Maryland first state to OK Facebook Password protection bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland is poised to become the first state that bans employers from demanding applicants or workers hand over their log-in information for social media sites like Facebook.

The measure, which handily passed the legislature earlier this month, keeps companies from snooping on password-protected content, a practice advocates of the bill say violates privacy and intimidates job seekers and employees.

Robert Collins, a former corrections officer in Maryland, says he was asked for his Facebook account information last year while being recertified for his job following a leave of absence.

Advocates for the bill say his willingness to come forward is rare because many people don’t want to risk losing an employment opportunity or upsetting their employer.

(POLL) Eddie Van Halen says dad fueled his drinking.. What do you think?

[poll id=”28″]

NEW YORK (AP) — Eddie Van Halen puts some of the blame on his father for his long struggle with alcohol.

In the May issue of Esquire, the Van Halen guitarist said “the whole alcoholism thing” developed when he asked his dad how to combat his nerves when playing music in front of people.

His father gave him a shot of vodka and a cigarette to ease his nerves, and that started Van Halen on a near lifetime of drinking.

The 57-year-old Van Halen also talked about the struggle to get clean, pulling his son Wolfgang out of school at 15 to join the band, and his relationship with ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli.

The issue hits newsstands on April 24. The recently reunited Van Halen is now on tour.

Kirkpatrick charges amended: Charges show McCook teen was sexually assaulted, then killed

McCOOK, Neb. (AP) — Amended charges filed in the death of a 14-year-old McCook girl indicate she was sexually assaulted before her body was sent ablaze.

Twenty-year-old Stathis Kirkpatrick, of Bartley, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in the death of Kailee Clapp, whose burned body was found the evening of Jan. 21, 2011, in a Bartley cemetery. She had been reported missing that morning from her McCook home.

The amendment filed Tuesday in Red Willow County District Court indicates the killing was carried out in conjunction with a sex assault.

Kirkpatrick had originally been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial but the judge later found him competent. His attorneys have filed paperwork indicating they’ll pursue an insanity defense.
