NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post) – On a conference call with the National Weather Service this morning, the moderating meteorologist said that only 2 or 3 times in the history of the NWS have they forecast the possibility of a high risk weather situation a day in advance. This is one of those times.
Although he indicated that “ground zero” would likely be in parts of Custer County, the entire area (with the exception of parts of northwest Cherry County) is under a slight to moderate to severe risk of extremely severe weather conditions later today.
Large tornadoes are being forecast for the main brunt of the storm, expected into the central and eastern parts of the state, but in Lincoln County and areas west, there is also the chance for large hail and isolated tornadoes.
In short, be wary and keep your eye on the sky.
As of yesterday, “life-threatening” storms are predicted through central to eastern Kansas and Oklahoma which indicate just how dangerous things could get in conjunction with these storms.
A dry line pushing from the west will meet up with a low pressure system which will come up from Kansas sometime around and after 3 o’clock this afternoon. With the abundant moisture evident from the fog and early showers, all the ingredients are in place for a very stormy afternoon and evening across our coverage area.
Be sure to keep checking the North Platte Post, and tune in to our Eagle Radio Stations- Mix 97.1, Q Country 107.3 and ESPN 1410 AM as we keep you updated on this dangerous storm situation.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Gov. Dave Heineman has confirmed he will sign a bill allowing Nebraska to restart its review of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
Heineman told reporters Friday that he wanted the oil pipeline project to move forward, as long as it avoids Nebraska’s environmentally sensitive Sandhills.
The bill would authorize the state to continue its analysis of new possible routes. Officials stopped the review after President Barack Obama denied a federal permit for the project.
Heineman has long said he supported the pipeline, but opposed its original route through the groundwater-rich Sandhills.
He made the comment in Grand Island, while urging lawmakers to uphold his veto of a city sales tax bill. Heineman appeared alongside Grand Island Mayor Jay Vavricek, who opposes the sales tax measure.
The bill is LB1161.
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (North Platte Post) – The “ladies” were out in full force this morning in downtown North Platte. Many brave men stepped out donning women’s attire, shoes and some even flaunted hats- all for a good cause.
A crowd gathered at Nebraskaland National Bank for the 7th Annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event to raise money for the Rape & Domestic Abuse program in North Platte. Several individuals and teams collaborated for the men’s march to stop sexual assault- some wearing their own creations; some had their shoes chosen for them, depending on whether or not they had volunteered themselves for the event.
Foot massages and lunch followed for the participants.

NEW YORK (AP) – Correspondent Natalie Morales ended up in tears
when she put herself and her 8-year-old son through the same
parenting test that “Dateline NBC” is subjecting others to for a
series that starts Sunday.
Using hidden cameras and actors, the network set up scenarios to
see if children really follow their parents’ instructions to avoid
strangers, not get into a car with a drunk driver or not cheat.
The results will probably depress you.
Time and again, children gave their names and addresses to a
“stranger” who had taken their picture and talked about putting
them on TV. Promised free ice cream, they climbed into a van driven
by an actor who could easily close the door on them and speed away.
Parents watched it all on monitors nearby.

HOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) – A 26-year-old Lexington man is facing two counts of sexually assaulting a child in nearby Phelps County in 2010.
Derrick Orvis was arrested Wednesday.
Phelps County court records say Orvis is believed to have sexually assaulted a child twice during the summer of 2010. The child was between the ages of 12 and 16, but details of the crimes were unavailable because some court records are sealed.
Orvis is a registered sex offender because he was convicted last year of attempted sexual assault of a child in Colorado.
The Nebraska State Patrol says it is investigating similar allegations against Orvis in Chase County.
Orvis is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail, and court records do not show an attorney listed to represent him.
