Buffalo County OKs new rule for wind turbines

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) – Buffalo County authorities have approved erection of wind turbines in industrial zones.
The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a zoning amendment that will require special-use permits before the turbines may be built.
The amendment was spurred by a business owner who wanted to put up a turbine to power his facility.
Tim Williams with Buffalo Air Services told the board that safety was a concern for him as a pilot, so he asked supervisors to mandate special markings for the turbine towers.
The turbine planned by Denny Jorgensen will have a red light on the top. Before approving his permit, the board recommended he use a stripe pattern with alternating colors on the base tower to improve its visibility.

Aerial tram to be built at Nebraska fairgrounds

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) – Nebraska State Fair officials say an aerial tram will be built on the Grand Island fairgrounds at Fonner Park in time for the 2012 fair.
The Sky Tram will be 40 feet in the air and run more than 400 yards, from the Exhibition Building to the Cattle Barn.
Executive director Joseph McDermott says construction will begin next month.
He says the Sky Tram will be a permanent feature at the fairgrounds but will run only during the State Fair. This year’s fair opens Aug. 24 and ends Sept. 3.
The tram will be owned and operated by Wade Shows, which will be the fair’s carnival provider starting next year.

Police say Bellevue shooting victim has died

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) – Bellevue police say a woman shot in the head at her mother’s home this week has died.
Police said in a news release that 21-year-old Michala Pomfret died early Thursday morning from her injuries.
Police say her stepfather, 36-year-old Michael Williams, is suspected of shooting her Tuesday morning on the front porch of her mother’s home. Williams and Pomfret’s mother had recently separated.
Soon after the shooting, police found Williams unconscious at his apartment, about a block from where Pomfret was shot.
Williams remains hospitalized with an undisclosed condition, but police say he is expected to survive.

(POLL) Exotic dancers.. Labor laws.. really? You’re discussing this?

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Are strippers employees or independent
contractors? That the issue before the Kansas Supreme Court. The
state contends Club Orleans needs to pay taxes for the strippers
unemployment benefits. But attorneys for the club argue the women
aren’t workers. They pay rent to use the stage and up to 50 bucks
for a half-hour in the private lap dance room. Lawyers say the club
makes most its money from food and booze, not the fees charged to
the dancers.

Broken Bow man held in shooting of patrol vehicle

BROKEN BOW, Neb. (AP) – A 35-year-old man has surrendered to authorities to face charges that he shot at an unoccupied Custer County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle last month.
Trent Esch, of Broken Bow, turned himself in at the county jail in Broken Bow on Tuesday.
Esch faces felony charges of criminal mischief and using a firearm to commit a felony. A jailer said Esch remained in custody on Thursday, pending $5 million bail. His attorney in a recent case didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.
The sport utility vehicle was hit by several bullets when it was parked at a deputy’s Broken Bow home on March 18. The sheriff’s office says no one was injured.

(POLL) 3 days in jail for saggy jeans… Only… In Alabama… WHAT?

[poll id=”23″]

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) – Authorities in central Alabama say a man
has been given a three-day jail sentence for contempt of court for
wearing so-called saggy pants.
Twenty-year-old LaMarcus D. Ramsey was in Autauga County Circuit
Court on Tuesday to enter a plea on a charge of receiving stolen
property.
Circuit Judge John Bush told Ramsey his blue jeans were sagging
too low and gave him the three-day stint. The judge told Ramsey to
buy pants that fit or a belt when he gets out of the county jail.
The judge says he finds it disrespectful and a disruption when
people wear pants below their waistline in his chambers
Calls to Ramsey’s public defender were not immediately returned.

Police seize $232,530 in central Neb. traffic stop

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) – Police seized $232,530 in cash after a central Nebraska traffic stop because officers believe the money came from illegal drug sales.
The Nebraska State Patrol seized the money April 5 after a trooper stopped a car for speeding in a construction zone along Interstate 80 near Kearney.
Buffalo County Court records say the trooper smelled marijuana while he was talking to the 32-year-old driver of the car. The 38-year-old passenger admitted smoking the drug.
When the driver got out of the car, the trooper saw three bundles of money on the floor. A small box of cash was found after the vehicle was searched.
Both men were ticketed for possessing less than an ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia before being released.

Officials: Lincoln County tornado disaster aid unlikely

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – A county official says Lincoln County has fallen well below federal minimums to get disaster help in recovering from four tornadoes that struck last month.
The tornadoes that struck near North Platte on March 18 caused at least $2.1 million damage and prompted Lincoln County to declare a disaster.
But county emergency manager Dan Guenthner told the Board of Commissioners earlier this week that one of the criteria for aid is that 177-200 homes be destroyed. Two homes and some farm buildings have been listed as destroyed, and 10 more homes were damaged. At least four people were injured.
Also, the county won’t seek help from the governor’s emergency fund because no public infrastructure was destroyed.
