Covalt stepping down as NE Dem Head

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The Nebraska Democatic Party will see a change in leadership at its state convention this summer.
Nebraska Democratic Party Chairman Vic Covalt says he plans to step down when his second term ends in November. Election for a new chairman will be held at the party’s state convention.
Covalt has endorsed Joe Higgins, of Omaha, who has a long history of service in the party, including currently serving as the party’s finance chairman. Higgins has also served as president of the Nebraska State Education Association and served two terms on the Nebraska State Board of Education.
Former gubernatorial candidate and attorney Mike Meister, of Scottsbluff, is also seeking to lead the state party.
The Nebraska Democratic Party state convention will be held June 22-24 in Omaha.

 

Chadron State president announces retirement

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) – Chadron State College President Janie Park has announced her intention to retire.
The announcement was made Tuesday during an employee honors luncheon.
Vice president for enrollment management and student services Randy Rhine will become the interim president of the school, which has nearly 3,000 students.
The 65-year-old Park has led the Nebraska State College System campus since August 2005. She says she and her husband intend to return to their home in Red Lodge, Mont., on May 12, the day after she ends her Nebraska service.

 

Another carjacker gets jacked

GERING, Neb. (AP) – Another 18-year-old Gering man has been sentenced for his role in the beating and robbery of a man in Scottsbluff.
Antonio Ybarra on Tuesday was sentenced to six to 10 years in prison. He’d been convicted of robbery and assault.
Prosecutors say Ybarra was one of four young men who helped beat another 18-year-old man and stole his car last October.
Raymond Furrey was placed on probation for his role. On Monday, Dimas Garza was given five to eight years in prison. Santana Garza is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.

 

Central Nebraska man dies in collision

JUNIATA, Neb. (AP) – Authorities say a 57-year-old Juniata man has died in a head-on collision near the south-central Nebraska city.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office says Paul Walters was driving west in a van about 4:10 p.m. Monday when it crested a hill and hit an eastbound pickup driven by Brad Reiss, of Heartwell.
Deputies say Walters died at the scene.
The 39-year-old Reiss and his passenger, Kim Kohn, were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The accident cause is being investigated.

KEVIN COSTNER TALKS WHITNEY: The actor said that he found out about Whitney’s drug addiction when a couple of times over the past 7 or 8 years, people would ask him to write her a letter. KIM SHOT DOWN BY REGGIE? RadarOnline.com reported that before getting together with Kanye West, Kim tried to get back with her ex, but, “Reggie pointed out that they both want very different things out of life. Reggie is much more low key than Kim and does not want to live his life in the public eye the way she has chosen to. ”

LEANN RIMES DISMISSES BOOK CLAIMS: She denied rumors of a rival tell-all to Brandi Glanville’s, tweeting, “So you all know, I’m blonde & there’s no “tell all” book about divorce, marriage and “my side.” I just laugh at a of this!”

KIM KARDASHIAN WANTS TO BE DISMISSED FROM LAWSUIT: Kim filed papers in her ongoing battle with a beauty company that has accused her of endorsing a competitor’s product. She’s saying that her opinions reflected honest experience and she should be dismissed from the suit.

RICKI LAKE ELOPES: Ricki Lake is a married woman. The talk show host tied the knot with fiance Christian Evans in a secret ceremony last Sunday (April 9th) in California. Lake told People magazine, “It was a beautiful moment I will never forget. I wasn’t anxious or nervous. I was really relaxed and excited.” Lake has two sons, Milo, 15, and Owen, 10, from a previous marriage that ended in divorce in 2003.

 GEORGE CLOONEY HOSTING OBAMA FUNDRAISER: George Clooney is hosting a fundraiser for President Obama at his home. It will cost $40,000 a head to attend the event, which will take place in May. Clooney told ET, “I’m proud to do whatever I can to support the President. As long as no one asks me to sing.” Around 150 people are expected to attend and all proceeds will be given to the Obama Victory Fund.

SLY STALLONE MENTIONS ‘REAL HOUSEWIFE’ IN LAWSUIT’: Sylvester Stallone is suing a contractor who worked on his house — and its all Bravo star Lisa Vanderpump’s fault. According to the lawsuit, Sly hired Mohamed Hadid at Lisa’s recommendation, but Hadid did a “shameful” re-modeling job. The suit charges, “Far from the top quality job promised, Hadid’s work was riddled with defects, abysmal quality and poor workmanship. If you want to hire an incompetent con man to do construction, then Mohamed Hadid is your man.”

SEAL FIRES BACK AT HEIDI: Seal and Heidi Klum’s divorce might be getting ugly. Seal filed a response to Heidi’s petition asking for joint physical custody of their four children — while she wants primary custody. Both parties are seeking to deny spousal support to the other.

TONY ROMO IS A FATHER: Tony Romo and his wife, Candice welcomed a baby boy on Monday (April 9th). Dallas Cowboys vice president Rich Dalrymple announced that the baby’s name is Hawkins Crawford Romo. It is the first child for the Romos, who were married last May.

JIM BELUSHI GETS LUCKY IN POT BUST: Jim Belushi was busted at the Martha’s Vineyard airport last weekend after TSA agents discovered he was carrying a joint. PerezHilton.com reported that Belushi tried to present his medical marijuana card as an excuse, but those are only legal in California. Because weed is decriminalized in Massachusetts and it was such a small amount, the actor was let off with just a warning.

JENELLE EVANS IS SINGLE AGAIN: Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans has split with her latest boyfriend, Gary Head. The 20-year-old announced the breakup on Twitter, writing, “I’m very depressed. Me and Gary broke up for good. What hurts the worst is he doesn’t give two (bleeps) how I’m feeling.” She also accused Gary of once getting physical with her during an argument, but he denied ever hitting her to his Twitter followers.

 

‘GAME OF THRONES’ RENEWED: Game of Thrones has been renewed for a third season. Even though the show is just two episodes into season two, HBO announced, “Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season — and then surpassed them. We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series, and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season.” 

JENNIFER ANISTON TO PLAY A HOOKER? Jennifer Aniston will reportedly play a hooker turned drug smuggler the new film, We’re the Millers. The New York Post reported that the film is about a pot dealer who hires a fake wife and kids to pose as his family as he drives an RV filled with marijuana across the country. Aniston’s Horrible Bosses costar Jason Sudeikis is reportedly close to signing on as the male lead.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE SLAMS PETA: Jennifer Lawrence told Rolling Stone magazine that she did indeed skin a squirrel in her 2010 breakout film Winter’s Bone. When asked about the authenticity of the scene, Lawrence said, “I should say it wasn’t real, for PETA. But screw PETA.” The organization of course responded, saying, “When people kill animals, it is the animals who are ‘screwed,’ not PETA, and one day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature.”

DUELING MEMOIRS FROM EDDIE’S LADIES? Eddie Cibrian’s current and former wives are reportedly both writing tell-all books. The New York Post reported that both Brandi Glanville (ex) and LeAnn Rimes (current) want to tell their side of the love triangle. A source told the Post of Rimes, “[She] wants it to be a very honest book so she can speak directly to her fans and tell her side of the story. She’s been through a lot of changes over the past few years and this is her chance to speak candidly to her fans.” Last month Glanville announced that she would be writing a memoir about surviving divorce.

 


Keller, Huskers Hold Off Creighton

The Husker baseball team, led by a magnificent pitching performance from Jon Keller, claimed a 5-3 win over Creighton at Hawks Field last night. The sophomore right-hander went a career high eight innings to earn the victory, allowing two runs on four hits. Keller struck out six batters in earning his fourth win of the season. The Huskers did all their scoring in the third and fourth innings off of Blue Jay reliever Nick Musac. Kash Kalkowski singled in Rich Sanguinetti in the third to open the scoring, and the Huskers used four hits and an error to push across four more runs in the fourth, with Chad Christensen’s two-run single capping off the attack and providing the winning runs. The win moves the Huskers to 23-12 overall, while Creighton falls to 14-16. The Big Red visits Ohio State for a three-game series this weekend.
