North Platte Woman Arrested On Arson Charges

HERNANDEZ,-ROYALENE-ALICE - Arson-Residence

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) – A 43-year-old woman has been arrested, accused of starting a fire at her North Platte home so another resident would leave.

Royalene Hernandez was arrested Monday night on suspicion of felony arson.

North Platte police responded to a call from the home earlier Monday evening. Hernandez told officers she wanted another resident to leave. But officers told her she’d have to go through an eviction process, and they left.

Firefighters were sent to the home a little before 9 p.m. to battle a carpet blaze inside. Officers say Hernandez started the fire because the other resident still refused to leave. No injuries were reported.

Online records say Hernandez remained in Lincoln County Jail on Wednesday. Online court records don’t list the case yet.

He told David Letterman, “If you buy a $10 million chandelier, you should have a house to put it in. Just walking around with a $10 million chandelier isn’t going to do anybody a lot of good. And it’s not going to do any good to the chandelier.”

DAVID LETTERMAN AND CRAIG FERGUSON RETURNING TO CBS: David Letterman and Craig Ferguson are sticking around CBS. Both late night hosts re-signed contracts with the network, keeping them there through 2014. Letterman began on NBC in 1982 with Late Night, before moving to CBS in 1993 after Jay Leno was named host of the Tonight Show after Johnny Carson retired. OPRAH PENS LETTER TO HER 19-YEAR-OLD SELF

Oprah Winfrey has written an open letter to her 19-year-old self. In the latest issue of O Magazine, the mogul poses with a photo of her younger self. Inside she advices the “beautiful brown-skinned girl” to “love yourself from your own heart!”

She wrote, “I look into your eyes and see the light and hope of myself. In this photo you are just about to turn 20, posing outside the television station where you were recently hired as a reporter. You’re proud of yourself for getting the job, but uncertain you’ll be able to manage all your college classes before 1 and arrive at the station by 1:30 for a full day’s work. Even so, your biggest concern is how to manage your love life with Bubba. Yes, you are dating someone named Bubba.”

She continued, “You’ve spent too many days and years trying to please others and be what they wanted you to be. You will have to learn that the wounds of your past – rape, molestation, whippings for ‘stepping out of place,’ and not being allowed to show anger or cry afterward – damaged your self-esteem. Yet through it all, you’ve held on to a belief in God and God’s belief in you. That will be your single greatest gift: knowing there is a power greater than yourself and trusting that Force to guide you.”

  • She added, “The trajectory of your life changed the day you answered the call from Chris Clark, the news director at WLAC-TV. Your response was ignited by the words of your then-favorite Bible verse, Philippians 3:14. “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. From where I sit now, viewing your journey, there are few regrets. Only months before this picture was taken, you wrote a poem about a ‘woman becoming.’ Even then you understood that success was a process and that moving with the flow of life and not against it would be your greatest achievement.”
  • She ended the letter with, “Love you deeply,Oprah.”

Miles Adds Assistant, Loses Two More Players

Nebraska head basketball coach Tim Miles announced an addition to his coaching staff and two departures from his roster yesterday. Ben Johnson, an assistant at Northern Iowa for the last four seasons, will join Miles and Ronald Coleman on the Husker bench. The 31 year-old Johnson has Big Ten ties. He played his first two seasons of college hoops at Northwestern before transferring to Minnesota for his final two seasons. Next year’s Husker team saw their ranks decrease further when Miles announced that Jorge Brian Diaz and Mike Fox are leaving the program. Diaz, the promsing but oft-injured big man from Puerto Rico, played just 16 games last season and will pursue professional basketball in his home country. Fox played in 23 games last season. He’s leaving the team to focus on student teaching next year.

Huskers Blank K-State

The Husker baseball team finished off a season sweep of Kansas State with a 6-0 win in Manhattan last night. Five Nebraska hurlers combined for a four-hit shutout, the team’s first of the season. Husker starter Tyler King worked four scoreless innings in his first career start for the win, and Tyler Niederklein, Ryan Hander, Aaron Bummer and Travis Huber finished things off. Offensively, the Huskers first struck on Rich Sanguinetti’s double and an error in the third inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Sanguinetti’s RBI single and Kash Kalkowski’s two-run knock opened the margin to 5-0 in the seventh. Kale Kiser’s sacrifice fly in the ninth provided one last piece of insurance. The win snaps Nebraska’s two-game losing streak and moves them to 20-11 on the season. The Huskers open a three-game home series with Iowa on Friday.

Rockies Edge Mariners in Penultimate Spring Training Contest

Nine different players each had one hit for the Rockies in the win. Infielder Jonathan Herrera drove in three runs, including two on a double in that four-run fifth. On the mound, Rockies starting pitcher Juan Nicasio had his roughest outing of the spring, failing to make it out of the fifth inning and allowing four runs on eight hits. The victory moves the Rockies to 17-14 in Cactus League play. They play their final Cactus League game this afternoon, once again taking on the Mariners in Scottsdale.

Motion To Suppress Interviews In Dog-Kennel Child Abuse Case

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Four people charged in a dog-kennel child abuse case in North Platte want to suppress evidence from interviews with police, claiming their Miranda Rights were violated.

Ashly Clark, Lacy Beyer and Bryson and Samantha Eyten are charged with child abuse and false imprisonment. Police found Clark’s two boys sleeping in a wired-shut kennel last October.

During a hearing on Monday in Lincoln County District Court, attorneys argued that officers intended to arrest the defendants after arriving at the scene, and they were essentially under arrest at that time. However, attorneys say, no Miranda Rights were read and any information obtained from interviews should be suppressed.

Prosecutors say the information should be admissible because the defendants were interviewed during an ongoing investigation.
