Huskers Will Wear ‘Alternate’ Uniform For One 2012 Home Game

The traditional red and white of Nebraska’s football uniforms may have a dramatically different look on one occasion next season. Athletic director Tom Osborne has agreed to allow Adidas to design an alternate uniform for one Husker home game in the 2012 season. Osborne said the design has not been finalized, but that it will stand out from the usual standard. It is not yet known in which game the team will wear the alternate uniforms.

This is NOT the official design for Nebraska's alternate uniforms next year, but a mock-up found on the internet.

Huskers Wrap Up Sixth Spring Practice

The Husker football team was back to the grind yesterday for the sixth of their allotted fifteen spring practices. The Big Red worked out for two hours outdoors to open the third week of spring ball. Offensive coordinator Tim Beck spoke to the media after the practice session and said he likes what he’s seen thus far.

“Those guys are very hard-working and loyal,” Beck said. “We don’t have to spend a lot of time going over everything; they are getting a better understanding of everything. They’re identifying the mistakes faster because they’ve gone through it and they know what I expect. It’s been a lot better. A night and day difference.”

Beck specifically credited quarterback Taylor Martinez for his hard work, confidence, and poise thus far in camp. “He looks like a different guy in the passing game,” Beck said. “He’s had good confidence, poise, presence in the pocket and footwork. Every now and then he resorts back to some things but I’ve been really pleased with what he’s been putting on film.”

The Huskers will take today off and return to the practice field on Wednesday.

Huskers Visit Kansas State For Third Meeting This Season

Husker baseball hopes to rebound from a disappointing weekend on the road by traveling to Manhattan, Kansas and earning a third win in three tries against Kansas State tonight. The Huskers dropped two out of three games at Northwestern this past weekend in their first Big Ten road series of the season, dropping their conference record to 3-3 and overall record to 19-11. Tonight, they meet a familiar foe – not just historically, but recently. Nebraska has hosted Kansas State twice the season, defeating the Wildcats 9-6 back on March 6 and knocking them off 6-3 on March 27. Left-hander Tyler King will start on the mound for the Huskers. It’s the sophomore’s first career starting assignment. K-State will counter with a sophomore lefty of their own, Jared Moore. First pitch tonight is set for 6:35.

Heineman Vetoes $2.5 Million in Child Welfare Payments

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Dave Heineman has used a line-item veto to strike $2.5 million in child welfare payments from a larger state claims bill.

Heineman confirmed his decision in a letter to the Legislature on Monday. The Republican governor argued that the payments would amount to unconstitutional special legislation, and said the bill would make taxpayers responsible for the debts of a private organization.

Omaha Sen. Steve Lathrop, chairman of the Legislature’s Business and Labor Committee, says he will file a motion to override the veto. Lathrop says the cases Heineman cited don’t apply to the current claims bill.

The payments were proposed to reimburse subcontractors that worked for the Boys and Girls Home, a private child welfare service provider that had a contract with the state. Lawmakers passed the bill, 42-4.

EPA gives the GREEN LIGHT to a higher Ethanol Blend

LINCOLN, NE – In 2009, more than 5,000 Nebraskans voiced their support of E15, a 15 percent ethanol blend, by sending yellow postcards created by the Nebraska Corn Board to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Three years and a lot of hard work later, EPA today approved E15 as registered fuel, helping clear the way for E15 to be used in cars, light duty trucks and SUVs model year 2001 and newer – more than 120 million vehicles across the country.

“This has been a long road, filled with a lot of research, a lot of technicalities and a lot of work by many organizations who support the use of ethanol and biofuels,” said Kim Clark, ag program manager of the Nebraska Corn Board. “The end goal is to increase the amount of renewable fuel available to motorists in the United States, which can help lower fuel costs and reduce our dependence on petroleum-based fuels. Today’s decision by EPA is a milestone, and we are very happy to have reached it.”

The approval by EPA comes at an important juncture for the ethanol industry.

The industry hit a “blend wall” in the last year since a vast majority of the fuel sold in the U.S. is already an ethanol blend, mostly E10, a 10 percent ethanol blend. “The industry has the capability to produce beyond that wall, and we need to take advantage of it, especially since we are producing ethanol for $1 per gallon less than petroleum-based gasoline right now. It’s saving motorists money right now at E10 and can save even more with E15,” she said.

While EPA gave its go ahead for E15 today, it may take some additional time before the higher blend is available at pumps in Nebraska and elsewhere. Labeling for E15 has already been approved, but fuel retailers need to have misfueling mitigation plans on file with EPA and station owners will need to decide if they want to offer the fuel – E15 is not a mandate or requirement; it is simply an option for retailers.

The Nebraska Corn Board said some fuel retailers may benefit by installing a blender pump, which will allow them to more easily offer multiple ethanol blends, including both E10 and E15, as well as E85, which is approved only for flex fuel vehicles.

“We have had a grant program over the last couple of years that helps station owners cover some of their costs in installing a blender pump,” Clark said. “Station owners who are interested can contact the Nebraska Corn Board for more information.”

Station owners can also go to NebraskaCorn.org and click on the “Blender Pump Info” icon on the right-hand side.
