Lincoln Will Have Vote on Anti-Discrimination Measure

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler says he will call for a citywide election on a measure that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, following a successful petition drive to place the issue on the ballot.

Beutler said Thursday that the petition organizers sent a message of intolerance from Nebraska’s second-largest city, but he will honor the citizens’ right to vote. He said the Lincoln City Council will first have to repeal its new ordinance and approve fresh ballot language, because the petition circulated by conservative family values groups was improperly worded.

Petition circulators say they collected 10,092 signatures, four times the number required to suspend the measure before it takes effect and force a vote.

City officials say they don’t yet know when the election will be scheduled.
