TUESDAY: Peace Officers’ Memorial Day

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Dave Heineman is reminding Nebraska residents to fly their flags at half-staff on Peace Officers’ Memorial Day on Tuesday, a day set aside to honor fallen peace officers.

President Barack Obama is expected to sign a proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide.

In 1994, a federal law was enacted encouraging the American flag to be lowered to half-staff every May 15 in remembrance of the more than 19,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

In Nebraska, 134 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1866. They include federal, state, county, municipal and tribal agency officers, as well as railroad, game and parks and correctional officers.

Huskers Wrap Up Sweep of Minnesota

The Husker baseball team finished off a vital series sweep of Minnesota with a 6-5 triumph Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field. After winning the first two games of the series by one run, the Huskers jumped in front early on Senior Day with three solo home runs – back-to-back jacks by Austin Darby and Kale Kiser in the second inning, and Chad Christensen’s rocket in the third. Nebraska added two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to hold a 6-2 advantage, but the Gophers fought back, scoring once in the sixth and twice in the eighth. Husker reliever Dylan Vogt, who pitched the final two and a third innings, held the Gophers off the board in the ninth to preserve the win. The Big Red move to 32-19 overall and 12-9 in the Big Ten, a mark that sees them sit in a fourth-place tie in the Big Ten with one weekend left in conference play. The Huskers are back in action Tuesday night, as they host Wichita State.

Rockies Swept For Eighth Loss in Nine (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

The Colorado Rockies don’t love LA. They stumbled into Dodger Stadium for a weekend series and left Chavez Ravine even worse for wear, after the Dodgers routed them 11-5 to complete a three-game sweep. The Rockies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but it all got away from starting pitcher Alex White in the fifth inning, when he surrendered three runs and the lead and gave way to reliever Matt Reynolds, who promptly gave up three more runs to put the game out of reach. Carlos Gonzalez drove in a pair of runs for the Rockies in the losing effort. The Rox have now lost eight of their last nine games, including five of six on their road trip which continues tonight with the first of two games in San Francisco against the Giants. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action with pregame coverage at 8:30 and first pitch at 9:15.

Texas Tech Transfer Commits to Huskers

Tim Miles hasn’t yet been the head coach of Nebraska’s mens basketball program for two full months, but he’s already got three scholarship commitments to his team. The latest player to sign a letter of intent is Terran Petteway, who is transferring to Nebraska after playing his freshman season at Texas Tech this past year. Petteway, a 6’6” wing, saw action in 28 games last year for the Red Raiders, averaging 3.1 points per game in 13 minutes per contest off the bench. He was rated as the tenth best high school player in Texas after his senior year at Ball High School in Galveston by TexasHoops.com. Petteway joins JuCo transfer Deverell Biggs and prep school big man Sergej Vucetic as Miles’ inagural signing class. Petteway will be required to sit out the entire 2012-2013 season, per NCAA transfer rules.

NE Mother, Child Missing, But Foul Play Not Suspected

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say there are no signs of foul play in the disappearance of a Nebraska woman and her 11-year-old son. Plattsmouth police say Charlotte and Owen Schilling were last seen about 10 a.m. Thursday in the Plattsmouth area, when she checked the boy out of elementary school. They haven’t responded to cell phone calls from relatives. Police say Charlotte Schilling’s vehicle was found Friday near Lake Manawa, which is just across the Nebraska border near Council Bluffs, Iowa. Her wallet and cell phone were in the car. Officer John Hardy said that there is concern about the whereabouts of Charlotte and Owen Schilling but the investigation hasn’t shown evidence of a crime.

Rabies On The Rise in NE

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rabies cases are on the rise so far this year in Nebraska. State epidemiologist Tom Safranek says that the numbers of reports is on pace to top rabies cases from each of the past two years. There have been 21 cases reported so far in 2012. There were 53 reports in 2010 and 35 in 2011. Safranek says he expects the state could see close to 90 cases, the number reported in 2009. He’s urging the public to use caution when encountering bats, skunks and foxes and to avoid domestic animals that are behaving erratically.

NE Secretary of State offers voting reminders

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Secretary of State’s office is offering a series of reminders for voters as they head to the polls for the May 15 primary election.

Secretary of State John Gale says voters should check their registrations and polling places before heading to the polls, and should bring proper identification if they are newly registered by mail and did not provide identification. Identifications are not required of other voters.

Registered voters who have moved within a county, but out of their former precinct, should go to the polling place associated with their current residence. They will be required to vote with a provisional ballot.

Norfolk mail center saved from closure

NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — A mail processing center in Norfolk that was slated for closure has gotten a reprieve.

The center had been scheduled to close Tuesday as part of an effort by the U.S. Postal Service to cut costs. But, the U.S Senate passed a measure last month that gives the postal service an $11 billion cash infusion.

Local media reports that although the bill awaits approval by the U.S. House, the possibility of the funding has prompted the postal service to delay the closures.

Spokesman Brian Sperry told the newspaper that there will be no closures in the coming week and that there will likely be a revised list of closures.

The postal service had predicted it will lose a record $14.1 billion this year.
