Lincoln attorney receives his own sentence

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has suspended the state law license of a Lincoln attorney who mishandled his clients’ money.

In a ruling issued Friday, the state’s high court said John Beltzer transferred $2,000 from a client’s trust account into his operations account in 2004 to pay his employees and other operating costs. Beltzer conceded to the state Counsel for Discipline that he improperly managed the trust account.

Although Beltzer quickly replaced his client’s funds, the high court said the misappropriation was “a very serious offense.”

Beltzer’s law license will be suspended for one year.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes divorcing after five years of marriage

“Rock of Ages” star Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage, Fox News Channel confirms.

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” Holmes’ attorney Jonathan Wolfe said. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

A rep for Cruise issued a statement saying that Holmes filed the divorce papers.

“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out,” Amanda Lundberg said.

The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise.

Cruise, 49, and Holmes, 33, were married at an Italian castle in the fall of 2006 after a whirlwind romance that garnered major headlines for both stars.

Cruise was widely mocked and panned for an appearance on the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” where he jumped on a couch while emphatically declaring his love for the former “Dawson’s Creek” actress in 2005.

“I can’t be cool. I can’t be laid-back,” Cruise told Winfrey at the time. “Something happened and I want to celebrate it.”

The couple’s relationship continued to be a major source of public fascination over the next few years. After dating for just a few months, Cruise reportedly proposed to Holmes on top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Holmes often gushed about her husband, saying she dreamed of marrying him since she was a young girl.

But the seemingly fairytale romance was also plagued by reports that their marriage was a sham. Holmes often appeared on tabloid covers being portrayed as a victim or prisoner of the relationship. Holmes’ conversion from Catholicism to Scientology also dominated headlines, as did young Suri’s penchant for high heels and Starbucks.

This was Cruise’s third marriage. He was previously married to Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, and Mimi Rogers.  It was the first marriage for Holmes.

Another attempts to join the Meth selling bandwagon

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old woman has been convicted in a conspiracy to sell methamphetamine in Nebraska.

Prosecutors say the Drug Enforcement Administration reported that Hinojosa delivered meth in Omaha on several occasions in 2009 and 2010.

Man involved in chase receives his sentence.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A Kearney man has been given up to 10 years in prison for theft and leading officers on a chase through Kearney.

Local Media reports that 24-year-old Bret Shatters was sentenced earlier this week. His two felony sentences of 20 to 60 months are to be served consecutively; a misdemeanor sentence of three months will be served at the same time. Two other misdemeanor charges were dismissed in exchange for Shatters’ pleas.

Prosecutors say that on Nov. 26, Shatters led officers on a chase through town and north on Nebraska Highway 10. The speeds reached up to 110 mph on the highway.

The chase ended when the stolen car Shatters was driving spun into a ditch. He fled on foot but was soon captured.

Powers will take over for current party chairman Vic Covalt, who is stepping down when his second term ends in November.

Powers has a long history with the state party, having served the party over the last eight years as a national committeeman. He was selected by party membership during last weekend’s Nebraska Democratic Party state convention over two other candidates — Joe Higgins, a former high school government teacher from Omaha, and Mike Meister, the Democrats’ 2010 gubernatorial candidate and a Scottsbluff attorney.

Search for missing swimmer continues

BURWELL, Neb. (AP) — The search for a 19-year-old Columbus man has resumed at Calamus Reservoir in central Nebraska.

Local media reports that divers were using sonar Friday morning as they looked for Richard Tucker or his body.

Authorities say Tucker had been missing since about 12:30 p.m. Thursday when he jumped from his family’s boat to swim to the beach.

Garfield County Attorney Dale Crandall told the newspaper that he couldn’t confirm that there’d been a drowning, but he said he suspected as much.

The reservoir and recreation area are seven miles northwest of Burwell.

Crandall says family members didn’t see any signs that Tucker was in any distress.
