1956, Elvis Presley appeared on The Milton Berle Show, his hip-swiveling performance of his newest hit, “Hound Dog,” causing a national uproar.
1959, Robert Zimmerman graduates from Hibbing High School in Hibbing, Minnesota. He soon moves to New York City and changes his name to Bob Dylan.
1967, the Six Day War began when Israel, responding to a buildup of Arab forces along its borders, launched attacks against Egypt and Syria. Jordan then joined in. Within six days, Israel had more than doubled its size, occupying the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, Syria’s Golan Heights, and the West Bank and Arab sector of East Jerusalem, both previously under Jordanian rule.
1968, Senator Robert Kennedy is shot and killed by Sirhan Sirhan in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, shortly after winning the California Democratic primary.
1977, The Apple II computer first goes on sale.
1981, The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention announces that five gay men in Los Angeles are suffering from a rare pneumonia found in patients with weakened immune systems, making these the first recognized cases of what has come to be known as AIDS.
1999, Actors Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe are married. they later divorce.
2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City home. Smart was found nine months later in a suburb of the Utah city with a homeless street preacher who had once worked in the Smarts’ home and his wife.
