OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. (AP) — Air Force officials say a security guard acted properly when he fatally shot a man leading police through Offutt Air Force Base south of Omaha.
Brig. Gen. Don Bacon says the private security contractor who shot the man Monday afternoon followed procedure. But state law requires the shooting be reviewed by a grand jury because the man was being chased by police when he was shot.
Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis says the man was driving a car deputies believed had been stolen. Officers chased the vehicle as it entered the base through an exit lane at the south gate. The man raced north and tried to exit at another gate, where the security guard fired.
The man died later at an Omaha hospital. He has not been identified.
