New crime fighting tool closes 20 cases in six months

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln police have deployed a new crime-fighting tool that lets an officer keep four camera eyes out for criminals.

Local media reports that the cameras are mounted atop a sport utility vehicle driven by Officer Luke Bonkiewicz.

He says the Automated License Plate Recognition system can scan 2,000-3,000 license plates per shift, matching the numbers to a database containing information on stolen vehicles, missing people and vehicles linked to crimes or criminal suspects.

The system is credited with being instrumental in closing about 20 cases in the six months Bonkiewicz has been operating it for the department.

Rockies Run Selves Out of Rally in Loss (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

A ninth-inning rally was thwarted by boneheaded baserunning as the Colorado Rockies fell to the Texas Rangers 4-2 in Arlington last night. Down 4-0 entering the ninth, the Rockies loaded the bases with nobody out. Marco Scutaro singled in a run and Carlos Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly made it a 4-2 game. But Scutaro was erased from the basepaths on a bizarre pickoff play and rundown. Scutaro had been ruled safe at second on the rundown, but he failed to stay on the base, allowing himself to be tagged out. Jason Giambi struck out to end the threat and the game. The Rockies have lost 14 of their last 17 ballgames. They finished interleague play with an appaling 2-13 record. The Rockies return home tonight to begin a four-game series with the Washington Nationals. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action tonight, with pregame coverage at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

CWS: Wade’s Pitching Brilliance Has Arizona One Win From Title

Game One of the College World Series final went to the Arizona Wildcats in decisive fashion. Konnor Wade tossed his second complete game gem of the series as the Wildcats knocked off the two-time defending champions South Carolina 5-1 in Omaha. Wade baffled the Gamecocks, allowing just six hits and striking out three. He became the first pitcher to throw multiple complete games in the same College World Series since Cal State-Fullerton’s Jason Windsor did it in 2004. Offensively, Arizona was sparked by Robert Refsnyder, whose two-run homer in the first gave Wade all the support he’d need. Alex Mejia, Seth Mejias-Brean, and Bobby Brown also drove in runs for Arizona. Game two is scheduled for 7 PM tonight. A Wildcats victory would bring them their first national championship in 26 years.
