CWS: Rain Postpones Action, Forces Tripleheader

Heavy rain in Omaha put play at the College World Series on hold. The elimination contest between Kent State and South Carolina was postponed until this morning, with an 11 AM start time. The rescheduling makes life even tougher for the Golden Flashes and the Gamecocks, who must win twice tomorrow to avoid elimination. The winner of the morning’s contest will play Arkansas at 8 PM. In between, Florida State will try and stave off their own elimination against Arizona. That game is scheduled for a 4 PM first pitch.

Opryland Resort Hotel…No one hurt in explosion

A gas explosion at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center caused the evacuation of over 5,000 guests Tuesday night, but no injuries were reported and guests were allowed back inside early Wednesday.
Capt. Ken Walburn of the Nashville Fire Department said the explosion occurred at around 8:15 p.m. in the convention center portion of the hotel away from guest rooms.
He said it appeared that a gas leak was ignited inside a mechanical room on the first floor, causing significant damage to an escalator, walls and ceiling. He said the blast was so strong it damaged ceiling tiles on the third floor of the convention center.
“It was amazing that no one was hurt,” Walburn said.
The hotel sits next to the Grand Ole Opry House, the heart of Nashville’s country music scene.

Hundreds of sheriffs from around the country were staying at the convention center for the 2012 National Sheriffs Association. Walburn said the cause of the fire was investigated by the state bomb and arson squad, along with FBI and the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, but suspicious activity was ruled out.

“That was initially part of the concern,” he said. “We wanted to make sure, given the location and the convention, that it wasn’t an act of terrorism.”

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall, who was at the hotel for the sheriff’s convention, told WSMV-TV they could feel the blast from the explosion and saw debris falling.

“The concussion coming from the explosion was something that I’ve never felt before. It was a pretty alarming thing to happen in the location where we were in, and then debris starts falling, the ceiling tiles, where we were,” Hall said. “…And you could imagine the alarm when you’ve got federal government officials from D.C. here.”

Walburn said the hotel brought in structural engineers to check the damage.

MIAMI (AP) – Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks promises his team still has some “fight” left after last night’s 104-98 loss in Miami left the Heat one win away from a championship. LeBron James wasn’t on the court for the final seconds after suffering leg cramps but led Miami with 26 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with 43 points and Kevin Durant had 28, but no other Oklahoma City player broke double digits. Game 5 is Thursday night in Miami.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) – A jury could hear from Jerry Sandusky himself as the former Penn State assistant football coach’s child sex abuse trial nears its end. The jury has heard from eight accusers who claim Sandusky abused them, while the defense has countered with character witnesses and sought to discredit police investigators. Judge John Cleland has said testimony could wrap up today, with closing arguments tomorrow.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) – Percy Harvin has requested a trade from the Minnesota Vikings. A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Vikings are not likely to great the star receiver’s request. Norbert Tiemann dies at 87

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska Gov. Norbert Tiemann, who oversaw the implementation of the state’s sales and income taxes, has died. He was 87.

Tiemann’s daughter, Amy Tipton of Lincoln, confirmed Wednesday that her father died Tuesday night at his home in Dallas, where he had lived for more than two decades. Tipton says Tiemann had battled heart problems in recent years.

Tiemann, a Republican, served one term as governor from 1967 to 1971. As governor, he signed into law a new state tax structure that introduced sales and income tax collections into the state. He was also in office when state aid to schools was enacted, and he signed a bill designating “Beautiful Nebraska” as the state song.

He sought re-election in 1970, but was defeated by Democrat Jim Exon.

Polanco stabs man over argument…receives five years in prison

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A 25-year-old North Platte man who stabbed another man to death has been given one to five years in

prison.

Nathaniel Polanco pleaded guilty in March to a felony count of attempted assault. In exchange, prosecutors reduced the charge from
manslaughter and dropped a weapons charge.

Local media that at Polanco’s sentencing on Monday, he apologized for causing the death of 24-year-old Michael Fernau (FUR’-now) on Oct. 22.

Fernau was stabbed at his house and died at a hospital. Police say the two men had been arguing and that Polanco “just snapped.”
