Officer in Omaha Struck by Truck

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy was hurt when a pickup truck hit his patrol car during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Omaha.

The crash happened Monday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. near the Q Street exit on westbound I-80 and slowed traffic for about two hours.

Deputy David Wintle and the driver of the pickup were both taken to the hospital after the crash. The driver Wintle had originally pulled over and Wintle’s police dog were not seriously hurt.

Chief Deputy Marty Bilek says Wintle was thrown 20 feet when the truck hit the back of his cruiser.

Wintle was in serious condition when he was taken to the hospital. The truck driver, who wasn’t immediately identified, was in critical condition.

Dry weather putting stress on crops, Soy Beans make best of warm weather

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The recent warm, dry weather is putting stress on Nebraska’s crops.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it lowered crop condition ratings statewide because of the lack of moisture. Farmers are responding by turning on irrigation systems where they’re available.

Temperatures across Nebraska were about 4 degrees above normal on average last week.

About 70 percent of Nebraska’s corn crop is in good or excellent shape. That’s below the average of 78 percent good or excellent.

But the heat has helped the soybean crop develop quickly. About 97 percent of the soybeans have emerged, up from the average of 79 percent. About 64 percent of the soybean crop is in good or excellent shape.

The wheat harvest has begun in southeast Nebraska and should quickly move west across the state.

Nebraska’s Tax Receipts Higher Than Usual?

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says Nebraska’s net tax receipts in May were higher than expected.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue reported Monday that net receipts for the month totaled $338 million, which is 1 percent higher than the certified forecast of $334 million.

The report says net receipts from individual and corporate income taxes were greater than expected, while net sales and use and miscellaneous taxes came in below projections.

The comparisons are based on the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board’s forecast in April 2011. The board met again in February and decided to keep its projections the same.

Man sentenced to death, executed today in Idaho

[poll id=”31″]BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho prisons officials are making their final preparations for the execution of death row inmate Richard Albert Leavitt, who is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection Tuesday morning.

If the execution proceeds, it will be the first time that Idaho media witnesses are allowed to watch as the condemned enters the death chamber, is strapped down and inserted with IVs. The state made the change after The Associated Press and 16 other news organizations sued and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found Idaho’s former policy preventing witnesses from viewing the first half of executions violated the First Amendment.

Leavitt was sentenced to death in 1985 for the stabbing murder of 31-year-old Danette Elg in Blackfoot.

Nebraska Dpt of Health and Human Services offering fans!

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is offering fans and financial assistance to help low-income residents cope with the summer heat.

Children and Family Services Director Thomas Pristow says the department has joined forces with 43 local groups throughout the state to distribute fans. The local organizations decide who receives a fan.

Pristow says the state also administers a cooling program to help low-income residents and families pay their cooling bills. To qualify, residents must be at least 70 years old or be more susceptible to heat because of a medical condition that keeps them in their homes.

The fans were bought with money from the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and Nebraska’s health and human services department.

Nebraska man receives 30 days in jail for vehicle homicide

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska City man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and placed on two years of probation for a deadly crash near Union in southeast Nebraska.

The local media says 65-year-old Norbert Esser was sentenced on a charge of motor vehicle homicide on Monday in Cass County Court in Plattsmouth. He was also fined $1,000. Esser pleaded no contest.

Esser was charged in the death of 51-year-old Lonnie Houchin, of Lincoln. He died when Esser’s pickup hit his motorcycle in June 2011.

Authorities say Esser lost control of his truck and crossed into the oncoming lanes. He hit a car before he hit Houchin’s motorcycle.
