LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Treasurer’s office is holding a series of outreach events to help residents search for unclaimed property.

State Treasurer Don Stenberg announced Wednesday that members of his staff will visit fairs and festivals throughout Nebraska starting in July. Staff members plan to visit events in Seward, Madison, Grand Island, Nebraska City, Omaha and Kearney.

Stenberg says the state is holding more than $100 million worth of property for more than 350,000 Nebraskans, former Nebraskans or their heirs.

The average claim is about $450, and the largest single claim paid last year was $168,000. The two largest single claims paid so far this year were about $199,000 and $254,000.

The full list of events is available at the treasurer’s website, www.treasurer.org.

(ZOMBIES) Man savagely begins to eat dog…

WACO, Texas (AP) — Bond has been revoked for a Texas man who police say killed and starting eating his housemate’s dog after chasing a neighbor on his hands and knees while growling.

Waco police say Michael Terron Daniel remained jailed Wednesday after a judge revoked his bail in a previous assault case. The 22-year-old is charged with felony cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

Police say a caller reported a man was going crazy, and when officers arrived, they found Daniel on the porch covered in blood and holding the dead dog.

Police say Daniel told people at the home he had taken K-2, a form of synthetic marijuana, then assaulted them and started biting the dog’s flesh.

McLennan County Jail records don’t list an attorney for Daniel, who was arrested Monday.

The cause of his hungry hungry dog eating was the drugs…but the timing is all too close with other zombie like events…Don’t you think?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development made the award, which will be combined with $40,000 from the village.

The money comes from the USDA Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program.

Family dogs spends long time in sinkhole

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A central Nebraska family is thankful to have their dog back after the beagle spent about 36 hours trapped in a sink hole.

Local media that Buddy had gone out for a run with a cattle dog Friday morning, but failed to return by that night.

A thunderstorm swept the area overnight, leading owners Seth and Kim Krueger of rural Hastings to fear the worst.

Then, late Saturday, a faint bark led the family to Buddy — trapped in a sink hole about 100 yards from their home. The dog was muddy and frightened, but uninjured.

The Kruegers believe Buddy likely had company during his ordeal. A neighbor says the cattle dog spent Friday in one spot near the Krueger’s house until his owner picked him up.

Scottsbluff man impersonating an officer gets locked up

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — A western Nebraska man faces jail time after pleading guilty to impersonating a police officer.

Twenty-five-year-old Bobby O’Reiley, of Mitchell, was arrested after officials say he tried to pull over a car on Interstate 80 near Sidney earlier this month.

Local media says O’Reiley pleaded guilty on Monday in Cheyenne County Court. He faces up to a year in a jail when he sentenced on Aug. 13.

Authorities say a motorist called the Nebraska State Patrol and reported a driver was tailgating another car, flashing the headlights and showing a badge of some sort.

The patrol says a trooper stopped the car and found O’Reiley had a security badge, a handgun and two cans of mace.

Extreme heat spreads East into Iowa

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The sweltering temperatures the Nebraska Panhandle endured are spreading eastward across the state and into Iowa.

The National Weather Service issued heat warnings and advisories for much of southeast Nebraska and Iowa Wednesday as temperatures neared 100.

In western Nebraska, people in Sidney and Scottsbluff could look forward to some mild relief with temperatures in the 90s after several days above 100.

The heat takes a toll on people who work outside like ranchers, farmers and construction workers.

At Crossroads Coop in Sidney, Neb., workers are being rotated out of jobs unloading wheat trucks often because of the heat.

Virg Schumacher says it’s hard to keep workers going all day in the heat.

Schumacher said he doesn’t remember any wheat harvest this early in his 36 years with the coop.

Authorities release name of man who took his life during standoff

CRAWFORD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a man who apparently committed suicide after a chase and standoff with police near Crawford in western Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 40-year-old Chad Sorensen, of Minatare, was found dead in his car early Wednesday.

The patrol says the incident began late Tuesday when Sorensen brandished a handgun at some Dawes County deputies in Crawford. Sorensen fled in a car and stopped about two miles south of town.

The officers followed and the standoff began. The patrol says deputies approached the car about 3 a.m. and found Sorensen had apparently shot himself.

An autopsy is pending. Because Sorensen died during an incident with officers, a grand jury will be convened to look into what happened.
