‘DEXTER’ HAS TWO MORE SEASONS: If the producers of Dexter were able to choose — the upcoming season of Dexter would be its last. But instead, fans will be treated to two more seasons of the Showtime thriller. Executive producer Sara Colleton explained, “[That end date] was definite. We wanted to end it this year [after seven years] but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years. In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender. We have worked that out and know where it’s going to end. Next year will definitely be the last year of Dexter. Absolutely. We don’t know what the final scene is, but we know where [the show is] going. We know now exactly how it’s going to end. I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show. I want us to go out on a high and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end.”

First Nationals Dodge Rain, Hershland Rally in Win

In a rain-shortened affair at Bill Wood Field, the North Platte First Nationals seniors defeated Hershland 11-7 in five innings last night. The high-scoring affair saw the visitors jump out to a first inning lead, but North Platte responded in a big way to take an 8-4 lead after three innings of play. Hershland tallied three times in their half of the fourth to cut the First Nationals lead to one, but North Platte added insurance before the inclement weather moved in and brought the game to a halt. The win is the fourth in five games for the First Nationals, who improve their record to 17-12 on the season. They travel to Lincoln for a tournament this weekend. Prior to the game, the Leadership Awards for the North Platte legion program were handed out. Ty Brockmoller from the juniors and Taylor Williams from the seniors were honored.

Swim Trials: Phelps Gets Past Lochte in 200 Free

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Michael Phelps had reduced his workload at the U.S. Olympic trials by scratching the 100-meter freestyle.

His coach, Bob Bowman, announced the scratch Wednesday night shortly after Phelps won the 200 free, beating Ryan Lochte in their second head-to-head matchup of the Trials.

Phelps entered the 100 free mainly as insurance in case he failed to qualify for one of his better events. He actually swam in the preliminaries four years ago to ensure himself a spot on the 400 freestyle relay, but Bowman felt that wasn’t necessary this time. Phelps had the second-fastest seed time coming into the trials and he’s been on the 400 free relay at the last two Olympics.

Phelps still has four events left in Omaha, including the 200 individual medley, 200 butterfly and 100 fly. He’ll likely scratch the 200 backstroke, which begins Friday.

Pursuit Suspect Dies of Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

(Chadron, Neb.)- A 40-year old Minatare man is dead, after leading Dawes County Deputies on a short pursuit, then taking his own life in an apparent suicide.

Just after 11:00 p.m., (MDT), Tuesday, June 26, a man identified as Chad Sorensen, 40, Minatare, brandished a handgun at Deputies in the 200 block of Main Street in Crawford.  Sorenson then fled the area in a 2007 Honda Civic. Deputies attempted to stop Sorenson and a low speed pursuit with speeds of 35 mph ensued.

At approximately 11:17 p.m., (MDT), Sorenson stopped the vehicle in the southbound lane of Highway 2/71, approximately two miles south of Crawford.  The Dawes County Deputies, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Chadron Police Department, set up a perimeter around the vehicle and attempted to make contact with Sorenson.

Just after 3:00 a.m., (MDT), Wednesday, June 27, law enforcement officers using a tactical shield were able to approach the vehicle where they discovered Sorenson dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Nebraska State Patrol Investigative Services Division is conducting the investigation and will forward reports once completed to the Dawes County Attorney.   An autopsy will be conducted. State law requires a Grand Jury be convened whenever anyone dies while in the process of apprehension or in the custody of law enforcement.

Law enforcement was assisted by the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) in closing Highway 2/71, during the incident and subsequent investigation. Highway 2/71 was reopened to traffic at approximately 7:00 a.m., (MDT).
