The Fab Five lived up to their pre-Olympic hype. The US women’s gymnastics team was magnificent on the vault and floor exercise as they took the gold medal yesterday It’s the second time the US has won the competition, and the first time since 1996. There’s still more gymnastics action in prime time tonight, as John Orozco and Danell Leyva represent the US in the men’s all around competition. History was made in the pool last night as Michael Phelps won two more medals, one of them gold, to become the most decorated Olympic competitor ever. Phelps won’t swim in either the men’s finals tonight – the 100 free and the 200 breaststroke. The women’s finals tonight are the 4×200 free relay and the 200 butterfly. Elsewhere, American flag-bearer Mariel Zagunis goes for her third straight gold in women’s sabre fencing; the US women’s volleyball team looks to go 3-0 as they face China, and US women’s basketball takes on Turkey.

The Rockies and Cardinals play game two of their series tonight. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action live, starting with pregame coverage at 7:05 and taking you to the first pitch at 7:40.
Broncos Training Camp Update – Osweiler Has Inside Track on Backup QB Job
When the Denver Broncos drafted quarterback Brock Oswelier out of Arizona State in the second round of April’s NFL Draft, the plan was to bring him along slowly, have him apprentice under starting quarterback Peyton Manning and a backup, and ultimately become Manning’s primary backup. But Osweiler’s performance thus far at training camp suggests he might be able to skip one of those steps. Reports out of the Broncos’ Dove Valley facility are raving about Osweiler’s arm strength and mobility, a rare quality in a quarterback who stands 6’8” as Osweiler does. He won’t beat out the future Hall of Famer sitting atop the depth chart, but so far, Osweiler has outperformed both Caleb Hanie and Adam Weber for the number two spot. Another rookie impressing at camp has been seventh-round pick Danny Trevathan, who will push for playing time at linebacker.
Huskers in London – Former Men’s Hoopsters Suffer Defeats

Tuesday was a tough day for a pair of former Husker men’s basketball players in the 2012 London Olympics, as both Australia and Nigeria suffered losses to a pair of teams ranked among the world’s best. Australia opened the day with an 82-70 setback to Spain. Aleks Maric started for Australia and grabbed two rebounds and had a steal in just over nine minutes, but was hit in the eye in the opening minutes and missed most of the first half. Elsewhere, Ade Dagunduro and Nigeria were not able to duplicate their win over Lithuania in Olympic Qualifying, falling 72-53. Dagunduro played just over three minutes, missing all three of his shots from the floor. On Thursday, winless Australia now faces a must-win game in their qualifying group against China, while Nigeria faces a daunting task in taking on the United States.

Tuesday Sports Day – Another Program Feels NCAA’s Wrath
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The NCAA has added additional sanctions to the penalties Central Florida self-imposed after major recruiting violations were uncovered in its basketball and football programs last year.
The NCAA imposed one-year postseason bans for both men’s basketball and football on Tuesday. Those penalties are in addition to a $50,000 fine, adding two years to UCF’s previously proposed three years’ probation, reduction of basketball scholarships, the vacating of basketball victories and tighter limits of football recruiting visiting days.
The punishments stem from a 2011 investigation that found the programs were involved with runners for sports agents and made cash payments to recruits.
Former athletics director Keith Tribble and assistant football coach David Kelly were cited for unethical conduct by the NCAA and resigned. Basketball coach Donnie Jones served a three-game suspension.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Former Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes is out of jail after being arrested on suspicion of threatening a police officer who stopped him for a traffic warrant.
Manhattan Beach police Sgt. Paul Ford says Barnes was released around 11:30 p.m. Monday, three hours after his arrest.
Barnes was walking when he was arrested on a $26,000 misdemeanor warrant for driving on a suspended license.
Ford says Barnes also allegedly made a verbal threat to the officer. Total bail: $51,000.
Barnes later posted on Twitter that a small situation had turned into an “Urban Legend” and scoffed at what he calls “all you perfect people” judging him for missing a court date.
Barnes is a free agent. He was the Lakers’ top-scoring reserve last season, averaging 7.8 points per game.
NEW YORK (AP) – Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira had a cortisone injection in his left wrist, a day after hurting it while trying to make a diving stop at first base.
The Yankees said an MRI on Tuesday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital showed no structural damage. Doctors diagnosed Teixeira with inflammation, and the team said Teixeira will be evaluated again on Friday.
Teixeira was lifted after the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 5-4 loss to Baltimore on Monday night, their eighth defeat in 11 games. He said he hurt the wrist in his third at-bat against Boston on Sunday. Still, he felt as if he could play before he tweaked the injury in the field.

North Platte man involved in Meth and Manslaughter given Four to twelve years in prison
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A 42-year-old North Platte man has been given four to 12 years in prison for two drug convictions in separate cases.
Jeffery Manary initially was charged with manslaughter and a methamphetamine charge in connection to the death of Esther Smith nearly a year ago. After a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the manslaughter charge and lowered the drug charge in the Smith death case and another drug case involving sales of a prescription painkiller.
Manary was sentenced on Monday in Lincoln County District Court.
Manary’s co-defendant and Smith’s sister, Elizabeth Crawford, pleaded guilty in March to two misdemeanor counts in Smith’s death. Crawford was sentenced to 18 months of probation.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A 35-year-old North Platte woman accused of helping her husband operate a methamphetamine lab at their home has been given jail time.
Kristen Lehn was convicted of child abuse and possession of meth.
Police says Lehn and her husband, 35-year old Zane Lehn, had the meth ingredients in their home. Two elementary-age children lived in the home at the time.
Zane Lehn was given two to six years in prison earlier this month. On Monday Kristen Lehn was given 270 days in jail. Judge Donald Rolands says Kristen Lehn was primarily an accessory to the drug crime.

Former Police Chief makes terroristic threats with a gun, makes plea-deal, weapon charges dropped……
MADISON, Neb. (AP) — A former police chief of Newman Grove in northeast Nebraska has made a plea deal in a January shooting incident.
The 43-year-old Todd Jennings pleaded no contest to a felony charge of making terroristic threats. Prosecutors dropped a weapons charge in return.
Madison County authorities say two teenagers reported in January that they approached Jennings’ vehicle while it was stopped at an intersection in Tilden, thinking he was someone else. The teenagers say Jennings pointed a gun at them, said “Do you really want to do this?” and then drove away.
The teenagers said they heard gunshots that they believe were aimed in their direction. No one was injured.
Jennings is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 21.
