TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Police say a Tennessee Titans player has died of an apparent suicide.
Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis says officers found 25-year-old O.J. Murdock inside his car Monday morning with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended school.
He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died.
Murdock started his college career at South Carolina but left the school and played for two years at Fort Hays State. He was signed by the Titans as an undrafted free agent a year ago, and spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve after suffering a right Achilles injury. Murdock did not report to training camp over the weekend.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have signed linebacker Edgar Jones and placed defensive back Kyle McCarthy on injured reserve. Jones was with Baltimore the previous five seasons and saw action as both a linebacker and tight end.
McCarthy signed with Kansas City in February after two years in Denver. He injured his knee in practice on Saturday.
MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Brewers have fired bullpen coach Stan Kyles following another meltdown by its relievers.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Monday that the change was necessary to improve a bullpen that has recorded the most losses and blown saves in the major leagues.
Kyles had been the bullpen coach since 2009. He will be replaced in the interim by Lee Tunnel, who is in his fourth season with the Brewers as minor league pitching coordinator.
Brewers’ relievers have gone 15-26 with a 4.80 ERA this season. The Washington Nationals took advantage of the Brewers’ beleaguered bullpen Sunday in an 11-10 win in 11 innings.
