Monday Sports Wrap – Late Night Trading in Baseball

UNDATED (AP) – The major league trading deadline is 4 p.m. (Eastern) today, and several contenders are pulling the trigger on late-season acquisitions:

–The Atlanta Braves have boosted their rotation and added a right-handed bat to their bench by acquiring left-hander Paul Maholm (mah-HAH’-luhm) and outfielder Reed Johnson from the Chicago Cubs.

– The Los Angeles Dodgers have bolstered their bullpen for a playoff run, acquiring former All-Star reliever Brandon League from the Seattle Mariners for two prospects.

– Pittsburgh picked up outfielder Travis Snider from Toronto for pitcher Brad Lincoln.

– Seattle also sent reliever Steve Delabar to Toronto for outfielder Eric Thames.

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) – New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis (duh-REHL’-REE-vihs) fully participated in practice after sitting out team drills Sunday with some tightness in his right hamstring.

The All-Pro DB worked with the first-team defense during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, and showed no signs of being hobbled.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Jacque (ZHAHK) Vaughn says he’s humbled and excited to become the Magic’s next head coach.

The 37-year-old takes over the team with the status of star center Dwight Howard uncertain. Howard has asked to be traded and made it clear he doesn’t want to remain with the Magic.

Vaughn takes over for Stan Van Gundy, who was fired in May. He has no head coaching experience, but has served as an assistant coach with San Antonio.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Penn State backup safety Tim Buckley is the first Nittany Lion to transfer in the wake of the NCAA sanctions against the university. He’s expected to join the Wolfpack for their first practice on Tuesday.

The NCAA is allowing Penn State players to seek immediate transfers after the sanctions against the school for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
