Cabela’s reports a 56 percent jump, that’s some money!

SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — Cabela’s Inc. reported a 56 percent jump in second-quarter earnings as retail sales of outdoor gear and sporting goods improved significantly and online and catalog sales got slightly better.

The Sidney, Neb., company said Thursday that it generated $33.9 million net income, or 47 cents per share. That’s up from $21.7 million, or 31 cents per share.

Cabela’s revenue grew nearly 12 percent to $627.3 million in the quarter.

Cabela’s CEO Tommy Millner says retail revenue growth was particularly encouraging. And sales at comparable stores increased 4.7 percent.

Millner says he’s optimistic about 2012 and 2013, so the company is accelerating its retail store expansion plans.

Cabela’s said Thursday that it plans to open a store in Saginaw, Mich., in 2013 and open another store in Anchorage, Ala., in 2014.

UNMC seeks nominations by Aug. 31 for J.G. Elliott Award for significant health contributions to Nebraska

(OMAHA)-The University of Nebraska Medical Center is currently accepting nominations for the 2013 J.G. (Jack) Elliott Award. The deadline to submit materials is Aug. 31.

The award is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to medicine and health programs for Nebraska. The award is given in memory of Elliott, a former Scottsbluff resident who served on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents for 20 years until his death in 1974.

The recipient will be selected by the UNMC chancellor based on input from individuals or groups chosen by the chancellor. The award will be presented during UNMC’s spring commencement ceremony in Omaha.

Nominees are evaluated according to the following criteria:

• A Nebraska resident who has made a significant contribution to the health of the state through his or her actions.
• Statewide impact with contributions in the areas of education, research and community outreach.
• The individual’s actions should improve individual and community health.
• The health contributions should be beyond the scope of work-related activities.

Bob Kerrey wants to see the North Central Nebraska land ravaged by wildfire

AINSWORTH, Neb. (AP) — U.S. Senate candidate Bob Kerrey is flying to north-central Nebraska to tour areas along the scenic Niobrara River that have been ravaged by wildfires in the last week.

Kerrey is flying Thursday from Omaha to Ainsworth and will travel from there to Springview and Valentine before returning to Omaha on Thursday night.

Kerrey says he wants to see the damage firsthand, talk to people who have been affected by the fires and thank first responders and volunteers. Kerrey is also making a plea for Congress to pass the federal farm bill soon to make disaster assistance available to those affected by wildfires and record drought this year.

Norma Kurkowski


Norma Kurkowski, age 80 of Ogallala, passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the Hill Top Lodge Nursing Home in Beloit, Kansas. Norma was born July 3, 1932 at Haigler, Nebraska the daughter of Andrew and Marie Smith.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 30th at the Gubser Funeral Chapel with Pastor Drew Sharp of the Ogallala New Hope Church officiating.
After leaving Haigler the Smith family resided in several towns before finally settling in Wray, Colorado. After moving to Ogallala Norma was employed at Grandma Dowler’s café and then for TRW for thirty years. After retiring from TRW she also worked at the Ogallala Community Hospital in the laundry department and the Econo Lodge and Pump and Pantry motels cleaning rooms and doing the laundry. Norma enjoyed spending time with her family and tending to her flowers and garden.
Survivors include one son, Lonnie Kurkowski of Ogallala; one daughter, Kandice (Lynn) Hazen of Brule; three grandchildren, Alan, Matt and Nicole Hazen; six grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence Smith of Shawnee, OK; three sisters, Arlene “Lois” Smith of Seattle, WA, Audrey Benedict of Julesburg, CO and Goldie Bottrell of Ault, CO; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George Kurkowski; and six brothers and sisters, Melvin Jay Smith, Mildred Smith, Robert Smith, Roseta Booker, Sid Smith and Don Smith.

Ryan Purdy speaks at Rotary Wednesday

(NORTH PLATTE)-At the Rotary Meeting Wednesday July 25th Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ryan Purdy, President had time to to speak about

the improvements with the Mid-Plains Community College campus locations including the North Platte location.

They are focusing and studying on expanding the image and awareness of Mid-Plains Community College for all locations. A new website for the college is also a point of interest Purdy pointed out. Communication is a factor they are working on with strategic planning.

Purdy was excited to announce the new programs, and program expansions in the works like Sports Management, Athletic Management, and Non-Profit Management.

Purdy also mentioned the Ribbon Cutting date for the North Platte  campus to be August 22nd.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) – Embarrassing moment for London Olympic organizers, who mistakenly displayed the South Korean flag on a jumbo screen instead of North Korea’s before a women’s soccer match Wednesday in Scotland. The North Koreans  refused to take the field for nearly an hour, then went out and blanked Colombia 2-0.

LONDON (AP) – Police in London say a fire alarm forced authorities to briefly clear the sprawling mall beside the Olympic Park. Fears of terrorism have been at the center of preparations for the Olympics, and authorities have twice been forced to deploy troops when security arrangements fell short.

ABERDEEN, Md. (AP) -Police say Cal Ripken Jr.’s 74-year-old mother was found with her hands bound in the back seat of her car Wednesday after she said she was kidnapped at gunpoint a day earlier at her home outside Baltimore and driven around blindfolded by her abductor. Investigators say they do not know the kidnapper’s motive and there was no ransom demand for Vi Ripken’s release.

TORONTO (AP) – The NHL completed presenting a majority of its proposals in labor negotiations to the players union yesterday and is waiting for a response from the NHL Players’ Association. Representatives for the two sides met for a second consecutive day yesterday at the union’s headquarters in Toronto.

Lorene A. Wildes


Lorene A. Wildes, 95, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died July 24, 2012 at Linden Court in North Platte, NE.

She was born June 7, 1917 on the family farm, near Cozad, NE, daughter of John W. and Selma (Erikson) Bellstrom. She grew up in the Gothenburg/Cozad communities. She attended Dawson County Middle 2 School through 8th grade and then graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1935.

Lorene earned her RN in 1945 and her BSN in 1959. She was a dedicated nurse and worked in various nursing roles including outpatient, Central Supply, the Red Cross Blood Mobile and was a supervisor of Public Health Nursing. She worked for many years in the Omaha area. She was a member of the ANA in Minnesota, Maryland and Nebraska and Center Baptist Church in Omaha. Lorene enjoyed visiting friends, researching, reading, writing, and traveling.

Survivors include her six nephews, Stanley E. (Patricia) Youngberg of Woodbridge, CT; C. Edward (Janet) Youngberg of Evergreen, CO; Robert J. Youngberg of Lakewood, CO; Roger (Linda) Tederman, Michael (Vicki) Tederman, Terry (Jean) Tederman all of Omaha, NE; two nieces, Roberta L. (Robert) Wilson of Hershey, NE; Mary Ann (Ron) Sobon of Omaha, NE; her great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Lorene was preceded in death by her parents John and Selma Bellstrom, brother H.O. “Bob” Tederman, sister Gladyce M. Youngberg.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 26, 2012 from 1:00 -8:00 with the family present from 6-8 at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska.

Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church, 1002 Ave C, Gothenburg, NE; Friday, July 27, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Bill Ivey officiating.

Interment will follow in the Gothenburg Cemetery, Gothenburg, Nebraska.

Man making threats at hospital on $100,000 bail

YORK, Neb. (AP) — A 30-year-old man has been charged with making threats at a hospital in southeast Nebraska.

That Joseph Palensky, of Sutton, has been jailed pending $100,000 bail. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

Sheriff Dale Radcliff says Palensky went into the emergency room at the hospital in Henderson around 8 p.m. Saturday. Radcliff says Palensky was looking for a specific doctor and made threats to harm him, but the doctor wasn’t there. Authorities say Palensky threatened a nurse who was on duty.

Radcliff says Palensky told deputies who were dispatched that he was suicidal and repeated that he intended to hurt the doctor.

The deputies got a gun and knife away from Palensky and took him into emergency protective custody.

Man sentenced for his role in Meth Pushing

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 43-year-old Lincoln man has been given seven years in federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine operation.

Prosecutors say Michael McMillan was convicted of possession of a chemical with the intent of using it to make meth. McMillan must serve three years of supervised release after he leaves prison.

Prosecutors say McMillan acquired pseudoephedrine and supplied it to Mark Skoda and others. Prosecutors say Skoda used the chemical to make meth in Lincoln.

In March Skoda was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison.
