Nuggets Re-sign C McGee to Four-Year Deal

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets have re-signed free agent center JaVale McGee to a multiyear contract, fulfilling one of their top offseason priorities.

Masai Ujiri, Denver’s executive vice president of basketball operations made the announcement Wednesday night. Yahoo Sports reported the deal was for $44 million over four years.

The 24-year-old 7-footer averaged 11.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.16 blocked shots in 61 games last year for the Washington Wizards and the Nuggets, who acquired him in the Nene deal in mid-March.

McGee had two huge games against the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs, prompting coach George Karl to say: “I don’t think I’ve ever coached a guy like this. He has the moves of a 6-6 player.”

Earlier this summer, the Nuggets also re-signed free agent point guard Andre Miller.

Big Ten Commissioner Seeks Power To Discipline, Even Fire, Member School Employees

(AP) – The Chronicle of Higher Education is reporting that the Big Ten is considering a plan to give its commissioner the power to fire coaches in the wake of the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal.

An 18-page plan being circulated among Big Ten leadership would include giving Commissioner Jim Delany the authority to levy sanctions including financial penalties, suspensions and termination of a school employee. The Chronicle said it had obtained a document laying out the details.

The Big Ten did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was recently convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys, sometimes on campus. A report commissioned by Penn State said school leaders, including the late coach Joe Paterno, ignored allegations more than a decade ago to avoid bad publicity, allowing Sandusky to prey on other boys for years.

Paterno’s family denies that he participated in any attempt at a cover-up.

Man serving life in prison says his civil rights were violated, evidence tampered with

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Plattsmouth man who admitted in a 2003 outburst in court to killing his 4-year-old son has been granted a chance to challenge evidence that he says was planted.

On Thursday the Nebraska Supreme Court granted Ivan Henk a hearing on allegations that former Douglas County CSI director Dave Kofoed violated his civil rights as the crime lab investigated the death of Henk’s son, Brendan Gonzalez.

Henk is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty in 2005.

In 2010, Kofoed was convicted of evidence tampering in an unrelated murder case.

Henk’s lawyer subsequently filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Kofoed’s attorney says his client never planted any evidence.

No bail for 53 year old man in shooting of 30 year old Sidney woman (Follow Up)

SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 53-year-old man has been arraigned on murder and weapons charges and is being held without bail in the slaying of a Sidney woman.

Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub (shahb) on Thursday said Larry Martinez, of Sidney, is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 30-year-old Mandy Kershman on Wednesday.

A court affidavit says Kershman was shot at the home of a friend who was in an office in the house and heard the shot. The witness says he soon saw a man he knew only as “Larry” drive away.

Martinez was arrested later Wednesday after his vehicle was pulled over on U.S. Highway 385 north of Sidney.

Martinez is due back in court on July 30. Court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

19 year old woman has sex with boy under 16 years of age, pleads no contest

YORK, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old York woman has been given two years of probation for having sex with an underage boy.

Crystal Moul had been facing a felony charge of sexual assault of a minor when she made a deal with prosecutors. She pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Prosecutors say the incident occurred in November 2011. Under Nebraska law, people 19 and over cannot have sexual contact with people under 16.

Judge Alan Gless told Moul that he expected her to do well with probation.

He also told her that if she messed up, “you get to see me again, and you won’t like that at all.”

State of Nebraska making progress in efforts to comply with health care law

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The director of Nebraska’s insurance department is trying to assure lawmakers that the state has made progress in its efforts to comply with the federal health care law.

Bruce Ramge told a legislative panel Thursday that Nebraska is “on par” with other states in its plans to create a state-based marketplace where users can comparison shop for health insurance. Insurance officials say the state has contracted with a Chicago-based consulting firm to help design an exchange. The state must submit its plans to the federal government by Nov. 16.

One lawmaker voiced frustration that Gov. Dave Heineman’s administration was moving forward with a plan without more input from lawmakers. Columbus Sen. Paul Schumacher questioned whether Heineman has the authority to send a plan to federal authorities through an executive order.

Thursday Sports Day – Olympics Have Manpower Shortage

LONDON (AP) – Britain’s top official in charge of the Olympics says 1,200 extra UK troops have been put on standby for the 2012 London Games.

In a statement released Thursday, Jeremy Hunt claimed there was “no current need to deploy any additional troops” but opened the door to a possible infusion of extra manpower to help protect the Olympics.

Olympic security is in crisis after private contractor G4S PLC failed to deliver on its promise to provide enough guards for the games, which begin July 27. Government officials have been forced to call in police and soldiers to make up for the shortfall.

There are already 17,000 troops helping to secure the games in various capacities.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Washington Nationals activated right-handed reliever Drew Storen from the disabled list and designated outfielder Rick Ankiel for assignment on Thursday.

Storen, who had 43 saves last season, had surgery in April to remove bone chips from his right elbow and hasn’t pitched this season.

Ankiel, who turned 33 on Thursday, batted .228 with five home runs and 15 RBIs.

Washington has eight pitchers in the bullpen and four position players on the bench after the moves.

The Nationals also placed catcher Jhonatan Solano on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique muscle and recalled catcher Sandy Leon from Double-A Harrisburg.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The Philadelphia Flyers are going after one of the NHL’s premier defensemen.

General manager Paul Holmgren confirms that the Flyers have signed Nashville’s Shea Weber to an offer sheet. He would fill a void left by Chris Pronger, who has been battling concussion problems and missed most of last season.

A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that Weber’s deal is for 14 years and worth more than $100 million. Nashville has seven days to match the offer.

Weber’s departure would create a huge hole in the Predators’ defense. The team lost free-agent defenseman Ryan Suter to Minnesota earlier this summer.
