Rockies Ninth-Inning Rally Comes Up Empty in Loss (LISTEN LIVE TODAY on ESPN Radio 1410)

One bad inning doomed the Colorado Rockies to defeat last night. The Pittsburgh Pirates used a four-run fifth inning to get past the Rockies 6-2 at Coors Field. The Rockies led the game 2-1 going into the fateful fifth, thanks to an RBI triple by rookie Josh Rutledge. But Christian Friedrich started the inning with back-to-back walks, and it only got worse for the young southpaw from there. All four earned runs in the fifth were charged to Friedrich, who took the loss. The Rockies loaded the bases in the ninth inning and had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan got Tyler Colvin to strike out swinging to end the game. The Rockies and Pirates play the rubber game of their three-game series in Denver this afternoon. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action from Coors Field, with pregame coverage at 1:30 and the first pitch at 2:10.

Rockies Call Up Former Husker Brown

Andrew Brown in a game with the St. Louis Cardinals last year.

A former Husker baseball standout is the newest member of the Colorado Rockies. Andrew Brown had his contract purchased by the Rockies yesterday and was added to the 25-man roster. Brown was having a big year with AAA Colorado Springs, batting .317 with 20 home runs and 84 RBI. After playing two seasons at Nebraska, Brown was an 18th round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2007, and made his big league debut with the Cardinals last year. He was signed as a minor league free agent by the Rockies this past winter. Brown and fellow AAA player DJ Lemahieu were called up to the big club yesterday to replace two injured players. Chris Nelson was placed on the disabled list with an irregular heartbeat that hospitalized him overnight Monday, and Jonathan Herrera hit the DL with a wrist infection, believed to have been caused by a watch he was wearing.

Nuggets to Release ‘Birdman’, Sign Journeyman F/C Randolph

The Denver Nuggets are set to release Chris Andersen and sign Anthony Randolph to a free-agent contract. Andersen, a fan favorite better known as ‘Birdman’, has spent two separate stints with the Nuggets, including the last four seasons. But his playing time decreased this past year, and he appeared in just 32 games and did not play in the playoffs. New Nation-Wide Store Joining The Platte River Mall Family!

North Platte Neb.-Platte River Mall Management recently announced that the national retailer, rue21, will soon be opening in North Platte. rue21 offers a broad assortment of fashion trends in apparel and accessories for girls and guys. rue21 considers their stores young, fresh, and affordable. “rue” comes from the French word for “street” while “21” represents the age that everyone wants to be!

As of May 30, 2012, rue21 stated they operated 810 stores. The company is headquartered out of Warrendale, Pennsylvania and has stores located in 46 states. The closest rue21 store to North Platte is in Grand Island. Clarine Eickhoff, mall property manager’s remarks, “rue21 is a progressive company.

The corporate website lists 24 stores opening soon with our location still needing to be added. They are a company that is completely focused on a younger market. I believe the mix rue21 will add to the Platte River Mall will add additional energy and of course fill a portion of one of our much larger spaces. When complete, rue21 will occupy 4,800 sq. ft and will be in the north end of the mall near Famous Footwear. Construction is slated to begin this week with a late October opening if all goes as planned.

North Platte subcontractors will be working on the project and the general is Jim Wood Construction out of Arkansas. Wood Construction has done several build outs for rue21s and due to the aggressive timeline of the store opening we are needing an efficient process that rue21 is comfortable with.” The rue21 new store announcement follows last weeks announcement that Maurices temporarily relocated in the mall while their store is getting a full remodel.

Construction is to begin this week as well. “Progressive changes are happening,” Eickhoff added, “Conversations we have had with other retailers have lead us to believe that rue21 will be a catalyst for additional retail growth. Will others follow rue21 to North Platte? You know we can never know at this point. As a mall we are extremely optimistic. Mall ownership finalized the lease on July 3 rd after almost a year of negotiations. This was never a done deal at any point.

Leasing is a volatile process that requires patience, commitment and investment. When retailers such as this add options, tax revenue, and economic influence to a community, it is a huge accomplishment. Our Ownership has made a very important decision for North Platte and I can not be more pleased.”

Omaha attorney forgets about his sons dagger in his briefcase, wait a second…

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An attorney accused of trying to take a dagger into the Lancaster County Courthouse has been acquitted.

William O’Brien was found not guilty after a nonjury trial last week in front of Lancaster County Judge Mary Doyle.

O’Brien, of Omaha, had been charged with a misdemeanor of possessing a dangerous weapon in a city or county facility.

The dagger was found Feb. 8 as security officers passed O’Brien’s briefcase through a courthouse X-ray machine.

The 51-year-old told officers the dagger belonged to his son and that he had forgotten it was in his briefcase.

The local ordinance requires that for a violation to occur, the person must knowingly possess the weapon.
