His father, 44-year-old Miguel Avalos, and 16-year-old brother, Jose Avalos, were killed on July 9. Jose Avalos died at the southeast Omaha home. His father died later at a hospital.

Police suspect more than one gunman entered the home and shot down the three. Other Avalos family members in the apartment were not injured.

No arrests have been reported.

Carrie Underwood a Judge?

Carrie Underwood, from “American Idol” winner to Idol judge? Now that there are two slots to fill at the judges’ table, Underwood is one of the names being mentioned.  Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez both announced last week they won’t be returning.  There’s even talk that original judge Randy Jackson might take on a new role on the show and won’t be sitting at the judges table either.

Chadron man wins Buffalo Toss, nearly beats world record

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A 31-year-old man has returned the World Championship Buffalo Toss men’s championship back home to Chadron, home of the Fur Trade Days event.

Thye DeKoning, of Chadron, tossed the piece of dried bison dung more than 115 feet on Saturday to win the men’s 18-and-up division. DeKoning’s throw fell well short of the world record of nearly 187 feet set in 2000.

A Sidney man won last year’s event with a throw of nearly 168 feet.

The women’s 18-and up competition on Saturday was a family battle. Maureen Miller Hunt, of Chadron, had a throw of nearly 84 feet to top her sister, Nicol Bottsford-Miller, of Houston.

This year’s event drew more than 100 competitors to the courthouse lawn.

The “competition chips” were collected at Fort Robinson State Park.

Monday Sports Day – Paterno Family to Conduct Investigation Into Freeh Report, Also Promise to Help O.J. Find the Real Killer

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Joe Paterno’s family strongly denies the findings of a special investigator who described the late coach as one of four high-ranking Penn State officials who covered up child sex abuse allegations against former assistant Jerry Sandusky.

In a statement Monday, the family says they “vehemently disagree” with the conclusions reached by a team of investigators led by former FBI director Louis Freeh.

Freeh’s scathing report last week said Paterno and other university officials covered up for Sandusky to avoid bad publicity. It says administrators reversed a decision to report a 2001 encounter between Sandusky and a boy after the athletic director discussed it with Paterno.

Sandusky was convicted last month of 45 counts.

The family has attorneys reviewing the Freeh report and says it is “absolutely not” the last word in the case.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) – The Big East has reached an agreement with Syracuse University, allowing the Orange to leave the league a year early for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Syracuse announced last year its intention to join the ACC, but under Big East bylaws, the school needed to serve a 27-month exit period. Instead, the Orange will now be allowed to leave on July 1, 2013, and also pay a fee of $7.5 million to depart.

“This closes a chapter and opens a new one filled with exciting possibilities for the Big East’s future,” interim commissioner Joe Bailey said. “With the recent addition of eight schools to the Big East, the future for the conference has never been brighter.”

Pitt will also leave the Big East for the ACC, but its departure date is uncertain.

“We look forward to the new academic and athletic partnerships and the extraordinary competitive opportunities that membership in the ACC offers,” Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross said. “We are excited about both our final season in the Big East and our long-term future with the ACC.”

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Milwaukee Brewers starter Zack Greinke has been scratched from his scheduled start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

The 2009 American League Cy Young award winner has been the subject of trade speculation, but there was no immediate indication that he had been traded or sustained any significant injury.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke is expected to address Greinke’s status before Monday night’s game against the Cardinals. Tyler Thornburg will start in Greinke’s place.

Greinke is coming off a rare stretch of three straight starts for the Brewers. He was ejected in the first inning of a July 7 start in Houston, pitched again the next day, then started Milwaukee’s first game after the All-Star break. But Greinke gave up 10 runs in eight-plus innings during those starts.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Blake Griffin will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Monday to repair the medial meniscus tear of his left knee that he suffered during practice with the U.S. national team in Las Vegas.

The Los Angeles Clippers say Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic will perform the surgery.

Griffin returned to Los Angeles last Thursday after experiencing discomfort in the same knee that bothered him during the playoffs. He will miss the London Olympics, but the Clippers say he should be ready for the start of the NBA season.

Man on the run breaks out of jail transport. Keep your eyes peeled!

SPENCER, S.D. (AP) — Some residents and travelers in the Spencer area in southeastern South Dakota are on edge as authorities continue searching for an escaped prisoner.

SOURCE: (keloland.com)

Authorities say 31-year-old Oscar Herrera-Menjivar was being transported from Florida to Nebraska when he escaped from a prisoner transport bus early Saturday. It had stopped at a fuel station off Interstate 90.

Some area residents like Craig McManus think the escaped prisoner is long gone. But others like farmer Calvin Heitzman says that corn fields in the area make a good hiding place, especially since they’ll provide food if the corn is mature.

Authorities say Herrera-Menjivar should be considered dangerous and travelers in the area should not pick up hitchhikers. He was originally charged with sexual assault of a minor.

7th Annual Mikey Ride

The 7th annual Mikey Ride will take place on July 21, 2012 beginning in Wallace, Nebraska. The Mikey Ride, a poker ride and fundraising event, is hosted by Mike Maupin and began in 2006. The first year there were 35 bikes and it was decided at that time to have it become a yearly event. Beginning in the second year Mikey decided to have a free will donation, the proceeds of which were given to a Wallace teenager fighting cancer. In the third year a live auction was added, with the proceeds from that also going to the chosen person. In 2011, its 6th year, the Mikey Ride had 123 bikes and fed over 400 people dinner. The Poker Run starts with sign up at 9:00 and kickstands up at 10:00. Riders go through Hayes Center, Trenton, Haigler, Wray, Holyoke, Venango and Grant, then back to Mikey’s house in Wallace for dinner and the live auction. Poker hands are $5 each with all proceeds going back to the winning hands. If you don’t ride, come down for dinner and the auction beginning at 5:00 p.m. This year’s free will donation and auction proceeds are going to Klae Damoude of Hershey, Nebraska. Klae was born Febuary 9, 2012 weighing 1 lb. 2 oz. He is home now but still has a few health issues to be dealt with in his future. Klae’s parents are Brad and Becky Damoude.

She’s been charged in Furnas County with sexual assault of a child and with child pornography and conspiracy to commit sexual assault of a child in Buffalo County.

At least five men have been arrested in connection to the cases.

Yes…Selling your baby for a truck is STILL human trafficking

By: Kris Allen

Prepare to become very angry, or laugh your behind off.

In the town of Corbin Kentucky a mother of a 6 month old infant for whatever reason literally traded her child for a 1999 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck.

“Check out my new baby!! Her name is Dakota.”

Hold up now..it doesn’t stop there, the truck must have been a bad trade because shortly after she sold the Dodge Dakota for $800

Investigators are now searching for the 30 year old Heather Kaminskey who made the trade. She’s charged with Human Trafficking though has yet to be seen, too bad she sold her get-away truck.

The couple who took the baby are also charged with human trafficking, but you have to wonder…are they better parents? Either way the child is in state custody.

Whom ever bought the truck can truly call it “baby” since it apparently has the same value. Only in Kentucky….
