Winnebago housing grant puts more on reservation in homes, inspiring young

WINNEBAGO, Neb. (AP) — A housing grant program from Nebraska’s Winnebago Indian tribe is helping increase the number of home owners on its reservation.

14 families have built homes with the help of a $50,000 tribal grant. When combined with local and federal incentives, the package offers $65,000 to help residents build homes on the northeast Nebraska reservation.

According to U.S. census data, 68 percent of all Winnebago residents lived in rental housing in 2010. The National American Indian Housing Council says 54 percent of all Native Americans and Alaska Natives owned their homes.

Sarah Snake, a property manager for Ho-Chunk Inc., the tribe’s economic development arm, says the new homeowners’ success helps inspire younger people on the reservation.

Rockies Drop Rubber Game to Phillies (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT on ESPN Radio 1410)

Philadelphia’s All-Star southpaw outdueled the Colorado Rockies’ rookie lefty in a 5-1 victory for the Phillies at Coors Field yesterday. Cole Hamels worked eight innings, allowing the Rockies just one run on six hits while striking out seven. His mound counterpart, Colorado’s Drew Pomeranz, departed after five innings having allowed five runs on five hits while striking out five. The big blow off Pomeranz was a three-run homer by Hunter Pence in the fifth inning that blew the game open for the Phillies. Carlos Gonzalez drove in the Rockies only run with an RBI triple in the sixth. It was CarGo’s team leading 60th run batted in of the season. The Rockies begin a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Coors Field. ESPN Radio 1410 has the call, with pregame coverage beginning at 7:05 and the first pitch at 7:40.

Bronco Star Dumervil Charged With Felony

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm in Florida. The 28-year-old is facing the third-degree felony charge in Miami-Dade County. Det. Vivian Hernandez says Dumervil and another man were arrested Saturday in Miami Beach. No further details were immediately available. A spokesman for the Denver Broncos said that the team is aware of the matter and continuing to gather facts. He said they will review the details as the legal process moves forward. Dumervil had 9.5 sacks last year in his return from missing the entire 2010 season due to injury. In 2009, Dumervil led the NFL with 17 sacks. Dumervil’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, said that no assault took place and he expects authorities to clear his client after they conclude their investigation.

Husker Baseball Snags Commitment From JuCo Reliever

The Husker baseball program has secured a commitment from a pitcher who will be expected to close games next season. Josh Roeder, who played at Louisburg College his freshman year, was a dominant JuCo closer last year, posting 13 saves, a 2.06 ERA, and 50 strikeouts in 39 and one-third innings. The right-hander will have three years of eligibility at Nebraska. He fills the void created by Travis Huber. Last year’s closer for the Huskers signed with the Minnesota Twins last week.

Huskers Lose Committment From LA ATH Dixon

The Nebraska football recruiting class of 2013 is back down to 12 members. Tre’vell Dixon, a three-star athlete prospect out of Baldwin, Louisiana, decommitted from the Huskers last week. While initial reports suggested Dixon had chosen to go to Arizona State, the senior-to-be at West St. Mary High School debunked those rumors himself. He told Husker Illustrated that Nebraska’s still in the picture for his services, but that he needs more time to decide.

Big Ten, Pac-12 Suspend Plans For Scheduling Collaboration Across All Sports

Statement from Pac-12 Conference Commissioner Larry Scott:

“After extensive deliberation and consultation with member institutions, television partners and others, the Pac-12 and Big Ten have decided not to pursue the previously announced plans for enhanced scheduling collaboration across all sports at this time. While we continue to value our close relationship, particularly our partnership in the Rose Bowl, the Pac-12 came to the conclusion that it’s in our best interests to maintain our nine-game conference schedule and maximum flexibility in out-of-conference scheduling. Thus, the Pac-12 decided not to lock into the proposed mandatory 12-game schedule in football.”

Statement from Big Ten Conference Commissioner James E. Delany:

“We are disappointed to announce today that the Big Ten Pac-12 strategic collaboration announced jointly in December 2011 unfortunately will not be consummated.  We recently learned from Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott that the complications associated with coordinating a non-conference football schedule for 24 teams across two conferences proved to be too difficult.  Those complications, among other things, included the Pac-12’s nine-game conference schedule and previous non-conference commitments.

“A great effort was made by both conference staffs to create football schedules that would address the variety of complexities, but in the end, we were just not able to do so.

“While everyone at the Big Ten is disappointed by the news, we look forward to continuing the historic partnership that we have with the Pac-12 and to working together on other matters in the future.”

Sage Stallone found dead

The 36-year-old son of Sylvester Stallone was found dead Friday, leaving the actor grief-stricken, his publicist said.

Authorities were investigating Sage Stallone’s death, but details were not immediately available.

“Sylvester Stallone is devastated and grief-stricken over the sudden loss of his son,” publicist Michelle Bega said in a statement. “His compassion and thoughts are with Sage’s mother, Sasha.”

Los Angeles police said they were dispatched to investigate a death at a home on Mulholland Terrace around 2:15 p.m. but could not confirm the person’s identity or offer details.

Coroner’s officials also said they were in the initial investigative stages.

“Sage was a very talented and wonderful young man, his loss will be felt forever,” Bega said.

George Braunstein, an attorney who has represented Sage Stallone for 15 years, said a housekeeper found his body Friday afternoon. Friends and acquaintances had become concerned because they hadn’t heard from Stallone in the past day, Braunstein said.

Sage Moonblood Stallone was the oldest of Sylvester Stallone’s children and co-starred with his father in two films. He was the first of two sons Stallone had with first wife Sasha Czack.

Sage Stallone made his acting debut in 1990’s “Rocky V” and also appeared with his father in 1996’s “Daylight.”

Also in 1996, Sage Stallone and veteran film editor Bob Murawski co-founded Grindhouse Releasing, a company dedicated to preserving and promoting the B-movies and exploitation films of the 1970s and 80s.

“He was very respectful of all the actors in all the movies,” Braunstein said. “You couldn’t mention a movie that he didn’t know everything about.”

Sage Stallone also directed the 2006 short “Vic,” which screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

Braunstein said Stallone was planning on getting married for the first time, and had frequent requests to work on films.

“He was a full of life filmmaker with his whole future ahead of him,” Braunstein said. “He was just very up and enthusiastic and positive.

“I think it was probably some sort of accident,” he said of the death.

Braunstein said Sage Stallone greatly admired his father but was working hard to make his own name in the film industry.

“He was very proud of his father and proud to be his father’s son,” Braustein said.

In May 1944, she met a young American soldier, Erceil E. Sellers, at a reception and Army dance for soldiers. They were married on June 5, 1945, at Dodbrooke Church in Kingsbridge.

In her retirement years she was a gifted artist who received art instruction from her valued friend and teacher, Don Dernovich. In September 2007, Erceil and Vera moved to the Gering area to be near their daughter, Linda. Their final home was to the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff. This gracious British lady will be greatly missed. One of her friends stated, “Everyone was drawn to Vera.”
