The Nebraska Corn Board speaks about recent farm deaths

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Corn Board is urging farmers to take precautions when unloading grain bins.

The warning came after a Nebraska man died Wednesday in a grain bin accident. Authorities say 33-year-old Jeffrey Schardt of Ruskin was killed when a grain auger he was trying to move fell over and pinned him to the ground.

The corn board says farmers and workers should use the buddy system when they are inside a grain bin.

Board chairman Alan Tiemann says people can suffocate with only 12 inches of grain covering them. He says that amount of grain would place nearly 50 pounds of pressure per cubic foot on the human body.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A state commission has sent the names of two Nebraska county judge nominees to Gov. Dave Heineman.

The 8th judicial district nominating commission picked Michael S. Borders and Tami K. Schendt, both of Broken Bow, for an open seat on the bench. The nominees were forwarded to Heineman, who will appoint one.

The vacancy is due to the retirement of Judge Gary G. Washburn. The 8th Judicial District consists of Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Custer, Garfield, Greeley, Holt, Howard, Keya Paha, Loup, Rock, Sherman, Valley and Wheeler counties.

Heineman’s office says he will interview both nominees in the coming weeks.

Farmers with flooded land along river may see the light

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Eastern Nebraska farmers can apply for help repairing flood-damaged land along the Missouri River.

The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service has $50,000 available to help landowners use conservation practices to deal with the massive sand and debris deposits the flooding left behind.

State Conservationist Craig Derickson says roughly 104,415 acres in 14 counties were affected by the flooding in Nebraska.

The damage in Nebraska is part of the 450,000 acres of cropland the flooding damaged in five states: Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Landowners interested in the assistance must apply to the USDA by July 25.

Jury says “GUILTY” in Lincoln rape case

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 51-year-old man has been convicted of raping a Lincoln woman in her home.

The jury returned with a guilty verdict for Mark Filholm after less than four hours of deliberation on Thursday. Filholm faces up to 50 years when he’s sentenced on Aug. 7.

Prosecutors say Filholm entered the woman’s home early on June 25 last year, raped the woman and then tried to destroy evidence by forcing her to take a shower.

The woman told police the Filholm’s face was covered by a blanket when he raped her, but she recognized his voice because she’d known him for several years.

35 Year old Kearney Woman charged with Embezzlement

OVERTON, Neb. (AP) — A 35-year-old Kearney woman has been charged with 14 counts of theft from her employer in Dawson County.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office says Faith Hampton was arrested on Thursday. She also is charged with unauthorized use of a financial transaction device.

The sheriff’s office says Hampton, who also is known as Faith Rader, was investigated after Brennan Farms & Livestock, of rural Overton, reported in February that it suspected embezzlement by an employee.

A Dawson County jailer said Hampton remained in custody on Friday, pending $100,000 bail. It’s unclear whether she has an attorney. Online court records don’t list the case yet.

(Letters to the Post) Are the kids at NE Youth Center safe?

My son called himself in as unconrtolable because he didn’t want to go to school. Now he’s placed at NEBRASKA YOUTH CENTER for boys here in North Platte,NE.

He was recieving terrostic threats of bodily harm from a few of the boys that my son lives with at NYC. All of these threats were documented by NYC staff,my sons caseworker,& his atty. I spoke to staff on June 22,2012 and they reassured me they were NOT gonna let anything happen to my son.

On June 27(my sons 16th b-day) these 3 boys assulted my son..The staff had left ALL the boys unsupervised for like 5 min.  One staff member went inside to answer the phone then the other staff went in to use the restroom so NO supervision or protection for my son.

2 boys knocked my son to the ground kicking him in the head and ribs. I had a mothers intuition to call & check on my son…. Staff said there had been an incident with my son but he wasnt injured I demanded to speak with my son and when I did he was crying hysterically & told me what happened I asked if I could come check on my son staff told me NO I’d be arrested for trespassing so about 2hrs later I was able to go see my son at ER he was realesed 2hrs later with “HEAD & NECK” injuries.

The boys that assaulted my son only recieved 3rd degree assult charges. I called everyone my sons caseworker, his Atty.,county Atty.,even tried calling Judge!!! I DEMANDED MY SONS RELEASE TO ME BECAUSE STATE DIDN’T PROTECT MY SON!!! Nope he’s still at NYC with his assulters and my sons safety plan is “bubble wrap” meaning my son who is the victim has to stay connected to the hip of the staff!!!! I called NE ABUSE & NEGLECT HOTLINE right before new release date and NYC is under investigation for my sons abuse there. If I had the money I’d sue the state for neglect!!!!!!

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A Dawes County official has confirmed that a body was found by firefighters battling flames in a Chadron apartment.

County Attorney Vance Haug (howg) said in a news release Thursday that an autopsy has been ordered. Haug isn’t releasing the victim’s name until a positive identification is made and relatives are notified.

Firetrucks were sent to the old Blaine Hotel a little after 8 p.m. Wednesday. Fire Chief Pat Gould says flames were contained to a single second-floor apartment, but there was smoke damage to the second and third floors.

The fire cause is being investigated.
