Nuggets Bring Back Miller, Sign Top Draft Pick Fournier

The Denver Nuggets made a pair of signings official yesterday, finalizing a three-year contract with returning veteran point guard Andre Miller and signing their first round draft choice, Evan Fournier. The Nuggets bought out Fournier’s overseas contract, meaning the 20 year-old Frenchman will play in America next season, either as a Nugget or in the D-League. The signings bring the roster to 14 total players, with one roster slot available.

Wednesday Sports Day – The News From The Slowest Day on the Sports Calendar

MIAMI (AP) – Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis have signed their contracts with the NBA champion Miami Heat, and will be introduced in news conferences later Wednesday.

Allen agreed to join the Heat on Friday. Lewis agreed to terms with Miami on Tuesday. Neither deal could be completed until the NBA’s offseason moratorium expired Wednesday.

Allen will make just over $3 million this season. He comes to Miami after five seasons with the Boston Celtics, who offered the NBA’s all-time 3-point leader nearly twice as much money as the Heat were permitted to spend.

Lewis will earn about $1.35 million from the Heat, plus another $13.7 million after getting a buyout from the New Orleans Hornets earlier this offseason.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Oakland Athletics have released left-hander Brian Fuentes.

The move announced Wednesday comes a little more than a week after the team designated Fuentes for assignment. The reliever finished 2-2 with five saves, three blown saves and a 6.84 ERA in 26 outings this season, including recording his 200th save May 2 at Boston to become the sixth left-hander in major league history to reach the mark.

The 36-year-old has 204 career saves with a 3.58 ERA in 644 career appearances over 12 seasons with five clubs. He went 0-2 with a save, two blown saves, a 19.50 ERA and .452 opponents’ average over his final seven outings.

Oakland returns to play Friday at Minnesota.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Suspended NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger says he tested positive for a stimulant he did not identify.

A statement Wednesday from Allmendinger’s business manager says the driver is collecting his medicines and supplements to determine if an over-the-counter product caused the positive test.

Allmendinger was randomly tested by NASCAR on June 29, and informed Saturday he had failed the drug test. His suspension was announced hours before Saturday night’s race at Daytona.

He has requested his “B” urine sample be tested, and it’s not clear when that will occur.

Penske Racing has already said Sam Hornish Jr. will drive the No. 22 Dodge this weekend at New Hampshire.

Allmendinger said in a Tuesday statement he would never knowingly take something on the banned substance list.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – The NCAA says that it will decide on whether to take action at the “appropriate time” in connection with its inquiry into Penn State and the child sexual abuse scandal that led to the ouster of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.

Findings from Penn State’s internal investigation into the case of ex-defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky are due Thursday. The NCAA says it has already been collecting information from the probe led by former FBI director Louis Freeh.

The NCAA says Penn State will have to formally respond to questions from NCAA President Mark Emmert, even after Freeh unveils his findings.

The governing body says it won’t interfere with other ongoing inquiries into the matter, and will determine if additional action is necessary. They offered no specific timeline.

Mick Jagger’s affair with David Bowie

A new book is alleging that Mick Jagger and David Bowie really fancied each other. It has been rumored that the two rockers enjoyed an affair back in the day — but a controversial new biography, Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger, by Christopher Andersen truly lays it all out. According to the book, the affair started in the early seventies after Mick and David met in 1973 at one of Bowie’s concerts.

The book says, “Bowie and Jagger were soon spotted everywhere together without their wives: sitting ringside at the Muhammad Ali – Ken Norton bout, hanging out at the London disco Tramp, yelling and stomping their approval at a Diana Ross concert, or just cuddling up together on a hotel room couch. Neither superstar complained when one enterprising photographer snapped the two men in a moment of repose, Bowie tenderly cradling Mick’s head in his lap. Bowie also took Mick to gay films.”

  • The book continues to talk about when Angie Bowie, who was married to David at the time — came home to find the two men asleep together in bed. The book says, “By October 1973, the Bowies were living on Oakley Street, just a stroll from Cheyne Walk. Angie had been out of town for a few days when she returned home one morning and went straight to the kitchen to make some tea. The Bowies’ maid, who had arrived about an hour earlier, approached the lady of the house with a peculiar look on her face. ‘Someone,’ she told Angie, ‘is in your bed.’ Angie went upstairs to her bedroom, slowly pushed the door open, and there they were: Mick Jagger and David Bowie, naked in bed together, sleeping. Both men woke up with a start. ‘Oh, hello,’ said Bowie, clearly taken by surprise. ‘How are you?’ ‘I’m fine,’ Angie replied. ‘Do you want some coffee?’ Mick, blinking awake, remained silent. Angie returned a few minutes later with coffee and orange juice on a tray.”

Miranda Lambert Cancels More Shows

On doctor’s orders country star MIRANDA LAMBERT has cancelled a further three shows on her tour as she battles ongoing vocal problems. The House That Built Me hitmaker announced earlier this month she was canceling some tour shows.  She had hoped to return to the stage for concerts later this week, but Lambert has now told fans she will not be performing as planned in Alabama and Georgia as she needs more vocal rest.

In a statement, she writes, “I’m so sorry to disappoint the fans that have already bought tickets to see me. I’m taking care of my voice and I can’t wait to get on the road again and bring you a hell of a show.”

The canceled shows will now take place in October.

Tuesday Sports Wrap – Stewart Penalized by NASCAR, Penn St. Investigative Report Coming Soon

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)- The National League jumped on American League Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander for five runs and coasted to an 8-0 victory in last night’s All-Star game. That’s the third straight win for the National League, and it means the NLpennant-winner will open the World Series at home and potentially have four home games. The National League victory had a distinct San Francisco flavor to it. Matt Cain got the win with two scoreless innings, Pablo Sandoval’s bases-loaded triple keyed the five-run first inning and Melky Cabrera added a two-run homer during the NL’s three-run fourth inning.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – A potentially explosive internal report into whether football coach Joe Paterno and other top Penn State officials took steps to conceal that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was a child molester will be released Thursday – online for all to see. Ahead of the report, the Paterno family released a statement that the legendary coach didn’t participate in any cover-up.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – NASCAR on Tuesday penalized two championship contenders – including suspensions for Nationwide Series driver Austin Dillon’s team – for problems found during qualifying at Daytona. Three-time champion Tony Stewart was docked six points, and crew chief Steve Addington was fined $25,000 because of a cooling hose found inside Stewart’s car after his qualifying lap before the Sprint Cup race that he won.

Nebraska State Fair to add parking space

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Fair has made a deal to add parking space for 3,500 more vehicles just east of the fairgrounds in Grand Island.

Nebraska State Fair

The deal for the nearly 40 acres of space was announced Tuesday.

A tram will carry people from the lot to the fair’s east entrance.

Fair executive director Joseph McDermott told the newspaper that he and other fair officials were caught off guard by the Labor Day crowd last year. He says the crowd of 68,000 would have been even higher if fair officials had anticipated traffic and parking needs better.

This year’s fair runs Aug. 24 through Sept. 3.

Woman disappears during vacation, reward offered

ASHLAND, Ohio (AP) — Businesses in the hometown of an Ohio woman who disappeared during a North Carolina vacation are offering more than $7,000 in rewards for information about the whereabouts of the woman or her boyfriend.

Authorities say 33-year-old Lynn Jackenheimer of Ashland went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina last week with her boyfriend, Nate Summerfield, and her two children but didn’t return with them. Summerfield’s brother called police to say Summerfield told him he strangled the woman.

Police said Summerfield returned his girlfriend’s children to Ohio and left them with his family.

Jackenheimer has been missing since July 4. Police are looking for Summerfield, who’s described as a person of interest.

Jackenheimer’s employer and other businesses have pledged rewards in an effort to get information.

Lincoln County Detention Center celebrates 1-year

North Platte Neb. (LINCOLN COUNTY SHERIFF)- On July 5th, 2012, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center recognized its one year anniversary.     The first year presented Sheriff Jerome Kramer and his staff with many challenges.  A major challenge was the entire Detention Staff was required to learn new positions and job duties; there is almost nothing done the same way in the new facility.    The Sheriff and his employees are very thankful for the new building and are working hard to keep it running smoothly and looking new.

In our first year of being open the Lincoln County Detention Center has house an average of; 93 inmates per day, 74 males and 19 females and booked approximately 2030 people.    We have served 100,635 meals out of our kitchen for an average of 283 per day.   We have also allowed 7204 video inmate visits.

The Lincoln County Detention Center produced some extraordinary financial numbers; considerable revenue has been generated for the county.    The new center has maintained an average of 10 inmates a day housed for outside jurisdictions and collected nearly $80,000 in fees this year.  From June 2010 to June 2011 (while in the old facility) we paid around $157,000.00 to house our inmates in other jails; this is a $237,391.00 positive difference in one year.   Approximately $43,000.00 in additional revenue has been taken in by the inmate phone system and commissary, thanks in large part to the technology in the new building.

With the new facility we have been able to implement new programs to assist the community and our inmates.      We have partnered with Lutheran Family Services implementing an IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) Drug and Alcohol Treatment for inmates.   Fifty-seven inmates have participated in the program and logged well over 400 hours of session time.   These inmates previously were sent to other areas of the state for this counseling service, at great expense to the county.     Additionally, inmates with mental health issues are still being housed in our custody; medical staff is now able to see them inside the secure facility.  In the old facility these same inmate would have to be housed in outside facilities and extra security would be added.   Medical treatment for inmates outside of the facility has dropped from $26,000 in 2010 to 2011 time frame to $13,300.00.  We believe this is due to added examination room and on staff nurse.

Countless hours have been put in through our Inmate Worker Program.    The inmate workers are responsible for assisting in meal preparation and delivery, all laundry, complete interior cleaning and most of the exterior ground work for the building.    Over 1200 hours has been donated to the North Platte Animal Shelter by Inmate workers.     Inmate workers have assisted Lincoln County Buildings and Grounds with hundreds of hours of labor; recently assisting with renovation of District 11 Probation Office.   Inmate workers have completed trash pickups for villages within Lincoln County, cleaning up parks and roadways.    As staff time allows, more of these events will be planned to assist our villages and community groups.        We have a G. E. D. program in place and many inmates have taken their required classes.   We have had two inmates get their diplomas but many more have completed course work while in the facility.

Most of the above listed items were not possible in the old Lincoln County Jail.    Sheriff Kramer and his staff will continue looking for efficient cost saving measures in the future.
